Best Communications/Journalism Schools in CA

Does anyone know which schools in California have good Journalism/Communication programs? (Excluding LAC's and Stanford, heh)

USC is, I think, the best for those.

...Bump...

Yeah. I've heard good things about USC for journalism. But it'll be tough affording it. Being middle-class sucks. (at least for aid)

I am even considering Cal Poly. But it seems one-dimensional (architecture)

Any UC's good for communications/journalism?

Davis? Irvine? SD? Others?

Nah, I'm middle class and I pay 12k a year for USC. None of that is merit aid either.

What's your secret?! Haha.

It can be done, StillRemains. I received a $17000 a year grant for USC freshman year. Definitely look into USC!

The problem with the UC's for journalism is that none of them has a real "journalism" program - all of their programs are focused on "communications" and tend to be more theoretical than practical. That said, the best communications programs in the UC system are at UCLA and UCSD, with UCSB being very decent.

For someone interested in journalism, I'd actually recommend SDSU's program. Several of the other cal states have good journalism/communications programs as well. Unlike the UC programs, the cal state programs tend to focus on journalism SKILLS rather than communications theory, helpful for when you start looking for a job. If you want a very good, low cost journalism program, look at U of Oregon (costs for out of state are about on par with the UC's, and they give merit money). I'd take the U of Oregon journalism school over either UCLA or UCSD simply because of its emphasis on actual skills.

Other very strong journalism programs within California can be found at: Santa Clara U and Pepperdine. And, of course, no one tops USC for journalism/communications in California - I believe it is the journalism program ranked in the top 10 in California.
