~Best dorm for animal science (and related) majors?~

I plan on transferring to SLO in Fall 2012 (if I get accepted). I’m planning on majoring in animal science with a specialization in equine (horse) science, as I hear they have an excellent horse program. Anyone know the best dorm for that kind of major? Or maybe biology, marine biology, etc majors? Also, I heard you can apply to live on the horse farm, which sounds really cool. Anyone have any information on that? Thanks!

My daughter’s roommate this past freshman year was an Animal Science major, also specializing in equine. In fact, she’s living in Herdsman Hall this summer because she got a job working with the horses. Her ultimate plan is to go to vet school with an Equine specialty. They lived in Yosemite Hall in one of the Towers. It was great! I think next year her roommate might continue to live in Herdsman Hall.

Where is herdsman hall? On campus? Can anyone stay there?

I really don’t know anything about Herdsman Hall or the criteria for living there. I just know my daughter’s roommate is living there this summer and maybe next year. I found some links on Google:

I’m not sure if this is different from Herdsman Hall:

Equine Center Residents

During Spring Quarter, applications become available and are accepted for Equine Center resident positions. The Equine Center has room for four residents who are hired and paid by Cal Poly Foundation as caretakers of the facility and the horses. The duration of the position is one year. The selected students pay a minimal monthly rent for the room at the center and are paid hourly for their work at the facility. The students are responsible for the daily feeding of all of the horses at the Equine Center and the maintenance and cleaning of the entire facility. A list of duties for a resident is as follows:

Feeding
Tractor Work
Scraping and cleaning stalls and runs
Doctoring injured horses
Assisting foaling
Setting up and monitoring irrigation
Facility maintenance
Supervising volunteer horse unit workday
Any other general health care or responsibilities required by Cal Poly horses and outside horses.
The year spent as a resident at the Equine Center is an extremely valuable experience that provides experience with the responsibility of managing a horse farm. Students gain valuable skills required for caring for a large herd of horses and the aspects of breeding, training and health needed to successfully maintain a horse facility.
