Whats the best overall dorm for stern freshmen in term of location and quality of dorm?

It doesn't really matter what school you're in too much (unless some Tisch) to choose dorms, because almost every freshmen has core classes at Silver. It depends on how much you mind walking and what you want surrounding you.

For close location and a really good dining hall, Hayden's the best. Hayden ends up being the ED dorm. However, it's not apartment style, so consider that. Rooms are nice, it's the only dorm that's carpeted. The best thing about Hayden is that no two rooms look alike. They all have little random rooms here and there (closets, kitchens converted into space) so it's a nice variation. Walk to class is like max 5 minutes if you're a slow walker, or if you like to roll out of bed right before class. Half a block away is McDougal St, which has lots of restaurants, pizza places, the famous Mamoun's falafel. Hayden's infamous for cockroaches and rats, and my floor's had like 4 cockroaches so far and apparently a floor rat, but I haven't seen it yet.

Third North and U-Hall are both apartment style. U-Hall's right on Union Square and next to Palladium, so nightlife outside will always be active and it takes like 30 seconds to get to the gym (which is really, really nice in the winter). The only thing I personally don't like about U-Hall is that every room is identical, but that's just me. Rooms are nice, walk to class is probably around 10-ish minutes. Third North is a little bit farther away, it has a cinema right next to it, St. Marks is close, which has lots of pretty cheap food, apartment style. Walk to class time is probably the same.

Brittany has by far the biggest rooms, but their location is kind of bad. Walk to class is probably like 5-7 minutes, there's not really anything really nearby.

Weinstein is the traditional, cinderblock rooms and it has no A/C. I've never heard anyone say they like it, so there ya go with that one. The really good thing about Weinstein is that it's closest to Silver, where most freshmen classes will be. It's less than half a block away. Weinstein has two dining halls, Upstein and Downstein. Upstein is open until 1 AM during the week (which is incredibly nice) and has Quizno's, Chick-Fil-A, a grill, and salad and soup. Downstein is all-you-can-eat buffet style (though Hayden's is by far better). Right next to Weinstein is Space Market, where you can buy just about any type of food and it's open 24/7. It's handy for Red Bull or 5-hour energy runs, but it's way overpriced as well.

Rubin is... Rubin. I don't know much about it, location's not great, dining hall's not great from what I've heard, rooms aren't bad though.

Goddard. Just, no.

Overall, I'd say for sure pick between Hayden, U-Hall, or Third North. Hayden's got the best dining hall and is close to class, and U-Hall and Third North have the long walk but are close to Union Square, where something is always happening. The other one's aren't bad either, but these three are best in terms of dorm quality and location.

--EDIT--

I just realized, U-Hall's not going to be a freshman dorm starting next year, so scratch that off.

Weinstein rooms suck, at least the one I've seen does. But the fact that it has 2 dining halls is awesome.

Hayden, I wasn't very impressed with at all when I saw a room.

Goddard, the room I saw was actually very nice, but I don't like the lobby or the hallways much.

And Rubin, is just ok.

I can't give you a first hand experience thing b/c I'm not a student there...at least not yet. ;)

Hey! My brother stayed in Goddard freshman year....I actually like that dorm. It's right next to Tisch hall and right in the heart of the campus..

And there's a Starbucks on the ground floor!

Well technically, Goddard is closest to Stern, as in you can get there in one minute. But Hayden and Weinstein are just three minutes away... so the distance is negligible. If you want to be super social, pick Hayden. If you want a close-knit, cosy environment, pick Goddard. And as for Weinstein, I don't see any pros to it other than the dining halls - and those are easily accessible to you if you live anywhere on WSP. Hope that helps.

My friend is in Weinstein this year, and other than the cinder-blockiness complaint, he says it's actually not that bad. All you have to do is spice it up a bit yourself, and it's just as good as any other dorm (or so he says).

Double check your info before you assume you are getting accurate info from this thread....

Weinstein 100% has air conditioning...daughter is a freshman there now. She loves the convenience of the location and of the dining halls.

And once again, Washington Square Park is not all closed! The sections they are working on are closed.

thnx guys
i was thinking about going to hayden but the cockroach and rats story freaks me out

i guess ill start buy visiting each dorm and go from there

thanks

if anyone has more advice feel free to post :)

Cockroaches and rats in Hayden isn't that big a deal. Chances are you won't see a rat, and maybe one cockroach (though if you are a girl and terrified of cockroaches, you'll let the whole floor know quite clearly if you see one =P ). I only say it's infamous for it because it supposedly has more than other dorms, which just means the other dorms barely get any. As long as you clean your rooms and bathrooms (especially bathrooms, b/c that's where the cockroaches will be), you'll be fine. For a freshman, I'd personally say Hayden's the best match, because starting sophomore year and on, you'll most likely be living in an apartment style dorm/apartment.

If I am a RD student, will it be very difficult to get into Hayden? Also, I was considering Brittany because it has bigger rooms, but noone really seems to like it that much. Is it just in a not so great location?

Why no love for Rubin? Isnt it supposed to be nice, considering its on 5th Ave.?

By the way, here is an excellent site with the low down on all of the dorms:

[WSN HOUSING GUIDE - SPRING 2008](http://apps.nyunews.com/housing2008/index.php?pg=thirdave)

Yeah, If I get into NYU, Third Ave North seems like where I am going. ( partying isn’t my cup of tea lol)

haha Ihatesats2, you made a million Stern ED chance threads. I am assuming you got in??

Where do you find the housing forms? I sent in my deposit a few weeks ago, but I still haven’t gotten any info in the mail, and when I try to use the site, they say that they don’t recognize my login…

Brittany is the ****!! I live here now and I LOVE it. One of the smallest dorms, only 500 people. Absolutely unbeatable location–right in the middle of Washington Square (campus) and Union Square. Literally 4 minute walk to class, on a gorgeous tree-lined residential block.
Plus i have no idea what nyrablu is talking about because we are literally 2 feet away from a Staples, K-Mart, Duane Reed, Blockbuster, Wachovia plus just about 23048 other stores that are on Broadway.

Also, Brittany is very social with huuuge rooms and walk in closets and chill people. I have found that it’s a perfect mix between partiers and more laid back people. I highly, highly recommend it!!

p.s. Almost every time I have been to Hayden I have seen a cockroach. It’s not very clean and the people who live there are usually wealthy, snobby, and into lottts of partying and drugs. It has earned the nickname “Hayden High” because it’s very catty and cliquey. I personally don’t understand its so-called “fabulous” reputation…definitely the most overrated dorm! I’d go with Brit or 3rd North any day…way chiller people/social scene
