Best dorm?

so i was accepted! and got scholarship so I can pick any dorm i want.

i want a single cuz im sooo messy and money isnt an issue because of outside scholarships.

that being said, which residence is best: new rez, douglas, or the 4 points hotel that was converted into dorms also

thanks so much

I don’t know about the dorm thing. But do you think you could just say your stats (gpa/test scores) since you got accepted.

2170 sat, 3.83 unweighted gpa in 3 ib classes

but seriously i hear new rez kids are seen as rich and snobby…is this stereotype true

congratulations! Why did you hear from them so early?

while i don’t go to mcgill from visiting new rez that stereotype seems fairly accurate

i heard that stereotype too… but i also heard they had the nicest dorms/food other than RVC (which is all girls…so if you’re a boy, you’re out of luck)

New Rez tends to be filled with rich kids, particularly from Toronto, and is generally very clique-y BUT your room would be huge and you would have your own bathroom (downside: you have to clean your own bathroom…). Between New Rez and Carrefour Sherbrooke (the more recently converted hotel), I’d pick Sherbrooke, if for no reason other than that it has only been a dorm for 1 year and hasn’t gone through as much wear-and-tear.
Douglas, on the other hand, is absolutely beautiful and very Harry Potter-esque, especially the dining room. You won’t have your own bathroom or a queen-sized bed, but its more of a typical dorm, is significantly smaller and generally a more tight-knit community, if that’s the experience you’re looking for. Out of the three, it would be my first choice.

yea i want a queensized bed and a private bathroom…mcgills gonna be tough so might as well live luxuriously…is sherbrooke good and a party scene like new rez is?

I’m not sure what you mean by good. To be honest, every rez has a party scene, perhaps with the exception of RVC which tends to be more quiet. It’s hard to characterize Sherbrooke since it hasn’t really had time to get a reputation yet.

good people, good facilities/food, etc

I’m in new rez this year, so here’s my take on it. It’s absolutely a party rez; there are people going out and getting drunk on any given night of the week. The thing about it, though, is that you can’t characterize ‘new rez kids’ as a group because there are SO MANY OF US. There’s 700 people living here, so it’s impossible to know everybody, let alone make generalizations about what they are like. There are plenty of rich kids from toronto, sure, and plenty of americans, but there are people of all kinds from all over the world, too. On any given night, there will be tons of people going out, tons of people staying in doing work, and tons of people just chilling on their floor.
The only things that are for sure about new rez are that the location’s decent (no hill), the food is the best anywhere on campus, there’s a grocery/pharmacy/liquor store in the basement, and you get a double (or queen) bed. So, if those things are important to you, go for it. On the other hand, if you’re concerned about having a real “rez community”, upper rez or douglas is probably a better choice… if you don’t mind the hill.

What about Solin? It looks pretty cool…

thanks for the advice…sounds really good!

Here’s my take:
New Rez was an amazing place to live for a freshman student. You get a queen size bed, a god-sized desk and dresser, and yes, you’re own bathroom and shower. It is truly a hotel room when you walk in, though with some creativity you can make it your own. My roommate and I used to take the couch and coffee table from the common room and made a living room. The demographics of new rez are heavily favored to the ottawa/tornoto kids/jews. But the place is big enough that there are plenty of people form all over the world. My flor had kids from paris, LA, toronto, vancouver, texas, brazil, chile, kenya and bahrain just to name a few. The social scene is very active as people will begin going out every night on the first week, and because there are no real drinking rules within the dorms, the atmosphere on the floors is lively… doors are always open. The food is excellent but expensive, the bathroom is convenient but often tedious, but the location is ideal, especially compared to upper rez. In fact, for the most part people in new rez don’t venture up to upper rez too often because the hike is a bit much.

As for upper rez, the hike is a pain in the ass, and consequently people stay on campus all day. Moreover, the lunch system is on a schedule that makes it difficult, whereas at new rez you can eat all day, and there are even places on campus where you can use your card. The food is arguable worse in upper rez, though it is cheaper and you can eat a lot more. The party scene in upper rez is often a lot crazier as well because there are more students in closer quarters, and the building appears less intimidating to worry about damaging it. As for the room size, they are tiny, some of the smallest single rooms ive ever seen on a college campus. cement walls, hard floors, basically just unappealing, but if you are looking for a place to have privacy and be able to study it should be fine.

ive never been to rvc or douglass hall, though ive heard douglass is amazing, although the rooms are supposed to be kinda ****ty. as for solin, i only went once or twice, mostly because its a few metro stops away. its a nice building and the rooms are essentially apartments, but the distance from campus was much too far for me my first year. i later lived about the same distance away, which was nice, but you will find location in terms of living is crucial to your nightly extracurricular activities. also, i don’t know what kind of people you guys are but solin is traditionally filled with artsy people, and they too keep to themselves because it is a separate community.

all in all, just about everyone I know had an amazing time in the dorm they chose or were given. they all have pros and cons and are all so unique that there is no clear better or worse, just expect to party a lot, and if you don’t expect to spend a lot of time on campus because you wont be able to study in your room most nights.
