I just submitted my housing application and got priority number 281. I'm a little apprehensive about my confidence in the dorms I chose. My top choices were McCollum, Rogers, Smith, Degraff and Deviney. What would you suggest to a transfer student looking for a social and cheap dorm, preferably near the Psychology buildings? Also, are the LLCs available for Spring students?
Thanks again!

For Spring semester, housing is basically limited to the spots that open up with people either graduating or failing out after Fall.

The odds are highest that, assuming you are an upper-division student, you will be in Rogers. They were still placing residents in here as late as 2 weeks into the semester, and it would not surprise me if there were still open spots in the building. I have heard similar rumblings about several other dorms as well, that for whatever reason they either didn’t fill up or some people never moved in.

Of course, that’s all dependent upon your choices being available at all, which it is possible that there won’t be 280 spots open for Spring. I personally wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case.

As for which ones are social, I can’t stress this enough any time someone asks: Dorms are as social as you make them. EVERY dorm has events for their residents. Whether you choose to go or not is obviously on you, not the dorm’s staff/hall government.

The cheap ones are pretty obvious from the Housing website where they list the cost of the buildings.

Thanks for the reply Pasbal. Do you know if the LLC’s are available for Spring transfers? I can’t find out anywhere and calling the housing line is a nightmare. And is 281 that bad of a number?

I don’t believe that LLCs are available beginning in the Spring. They are a year-long thing, so I don’t believe that you can apply for them starting in the Spring.

It’s tough to tell how good or bad any number is for Spring. In theory, there could be 0 spaces that open up in Housing, so you may not get a spot even with a priority number of 1. That is, however, really unlikely. I wouldn’t think 281 would be all that great of a number, given that it’s fully dependent upon spots opening up from people who graduate or withdraw from FSU. You’re asking for a LOT of the housing spaces to open up, which I would doubt would actually happen.

Aren’t you entering as a Junior? I don’t know why you would list Deviney or Degraff if that is the case. You’re an UD transfer, and it would be better to be around people your age or older when it comes to living with others.
Most UD students who do choose to live on campus prefer McCollum, Ragans, Traditions or Rogers.
Rogers is the worst of that bunch, and is not even worth it for the amount. In fact none of the dorms are worth it, but since you’re transferring I recommend it because it’ll help you get better aquainted, imo.
Rogers is cheaper than the rest, but it is FAR from social. Most stay to themselves as majority are international students and/or graduate students. So either some like to hang out with other international students or the the grad kids like to do their own thing as they are super busy. I lived there briefly and it was tough to meet others.
When I lived at Ragans I found it easier because many were willing to interact and meet others during the random social events that were planned at Ragans. Plus you lived with 3 others and had privacy so that was nice, because we could have quiet time when needed and not always in each others hair.
As for the other dorms you listed (Deviney, Degraff and McCollum)…those dorms can be as social as you want them to be. Though you can’t really rely on dorm life being the bulk of social interaction. I think going out to events, joining clubs/groups, participating in activities and whatnot will help you be more social and possibly meet potential friends. Most rarely hang out in their dorm as there are other things to do around campus.

I am entering as a Junior, but I’m 19 so I figured I could relate more to the freshmen.Yeah, I do plan on joining a couple clubs and maybe rush at a small fraternity. I’m going up there alone so I just don’t want to be stuck in a dorm like what Rogers sounds like. I just rearranged my priority list with Ragans, McCollum, and Traditions at the top. Hopefully I’ll get in to one of those. Thanks for the reply papertiger, any other words of advice would be much appreciated.

Oh I see, that makes sense then. You’ll be fine socially as long as you make an effort. People may come and go and be iffy, but you’ll find the right people and settle in before you know it.
There are a lot of things going on campus so you’ll never be bored and it’s a great way to meet people. The SLC has video game nights where people come in to socialize and compete playing mario cart or whatever. They also have karaoke and show movies often during the semesters. Club Downunder, on campus, have frequent gigs and social events. Joining clubs relating to you major will also be great so you can in a way meet people who will be or are already in your classes.
You’ll enjoy it as FSU and it is tougher for transfer students because we get thrown in there without any safety net, but as long as you keep up with leaving your apartment/dorm and meeting others besides just your roommate(s) you will be fine. Just remember to balance school work and fun time because you don’t want to run yourself down or lose focus, which is what happened to me and why I’m taking a semester off. All I did was focus on school work and didn’t leave enough time to open up and be social.
Anyway, good luck next semester!

Just keep in mind that there’s probably a good chance you will end up in Rogers. While Traditions and Ragans will also almost undoubtedly have people move out after the semester ends, Rogers to my knowledge has not filled up this semester, and since it’s primarily a Grad dorm (although there’s quite a few undergrads here, as well as a large number of international students), there will probably be a large number of people that move out at the end of the semester.

That isn’t to say that you don’t have a chance at getting one of the other dorms, because you certainly do have a chance. But Rogers is pretty much the go-to dorm for upperclassmen because it almost never actually fills up.

Just an Update, I got my first choice, McCollum. Thanks for the help guys.
