Best Exeter Dorms

i'm having trouble picking a dorm to request. from my visit and friends who go there i've seen that Amen is probably the nicest, newest, etc dorm, but ive heard that the 'Amen Girls' form a clique. they're mostly swimmers, and i'm a swimmer too but i want to branch out and meet a lot of people, especially in my first year. Dunbar seemed like a crappy dorm, material wise, but the girls were nice. My only problem isthat it was kind of impersonal--large, kind of like an apartment building. Does anyone know what Wentworth, and Bancroft and other girls dorms are like?? THANKSSSS.

When and how do you request a dorm at Exeter? (for 9th graders)

Thanks

As long as we are discussing dorms for girls, how about best dorms for boys?

don't we pick our dorms like in may or june?

I honestly wouldn't recommend requesting a dorm; I have a friend who did that and ended up hating it there.

That being said...

cglen, Wentworth is a guys' dorm.

I actually think Bancroft is cliquey-er than Amen. And Dunbar is large but very, very, relaxed. Probably one of the least strict dorms on campus.

how do you pronounce
amen? hahah. i was just
curious. is it like "ah-men"
or "ay-men"?

Closer to the second one. You know the alphabet (well, duh)? A, b, c, d...the "a" in Amen has the same "a" sound as the "a" when you say the alphabet. The "a" is stressed and the "men" is soft.

haha thanks. yeah i liked dunbar but it was kind of quiet, which actually may have been a good thing i dont know. I liked amen for what it was but i dont know if i want to dig myself a hole in my first year you know? also amen is closest to the two best guys dorms...

ANYONEEE?
if you go to exeter just please tell me which dorms, from your perspective, are the best for different types of people. or even the stereotypes.

Don't request a dorm just because the rooms are nice or whatever. I feel like the people and how compatible you are with them is the most important. I recommend not requesting a dorm; I let the deans place me, (I didn't even have an on-campus interview) and they did a perfect job.

Ditto what tuesdayair said.

But, writing from Dunbar, I take umbrage to the notion that our dorms are crappy. We have the nicest rooms on campus, except, perhaps, for Amen and some of the newer boys' dorms, and certainly many of the biggest. We have old moldings, fireplaces in some of the rooms, bay windows in the top floor, gorgeous hardwood floors, etc...

Plus, we have great dorm faculty, which will get even better next year when my favorite English teacher moves in! (Alas, I'll be a graduate by then)

some current student said that you should not request a dorm, and let them place you, where they think is fit. the poster said she switched dorms after the first yr.

that was me! (Switched McConnell to Dunbar). It's true, though - Dunbar has a LOT of eating disorders (not as much as Amen, back in the day.) But the good thing about Dunbar is that it's a large, diverse dorm, and within the dorm there are many cliques - some of which are more "eating-disorder-y" than others. The younger grades, particularly, seem a lot less competitive and image-based than the older ones. As for Amen, I think its reputation is fading; as far as I know, they've been making a concentrated effort to calm Amen down. But Bancroft is amazing! Many of my good friends are Bancroft seniors... They have very few singles, though, so be warned.

McConnell is very, very close-knit (either good or bad, depending on perspective), and in a rather horrendous-looking building. Lamont is - in the middle of nowhere and falling apart, but has a reputation for alternative (think hippies playing guitar on the quad) types, so if that's your thing...

Hoyt is rather athletic and preppy, I thought, albeit a bit under the radar. Wheelwright, Langdell, Merrill...perfectly decent dorms. Merrill has an awesome dorm head, though, although she'll be gone in the fall for Stratford.

thank you!!

any student currently at exeter know anything about a guys dorm called cilly? [don't know if i spelled it right]

I never realized dorms had such reputations. My son has recently been involved in selecting a dorm for next year at his school (NMH) and he said that while all the "tron" boys (Overtoun) were hoping he'd go there (it is the "jock/party" dorm), he opted not to because of the party rep. Evidently Crossley is also one of the dorms to go to if you are "cool". He is/could be cool, I suppose, as he is an excellent athlete, but he is choosing to go to one of the newer dorms where most of the Varsity soccer players go. Maybe not so "cool", but he wants to be with his teammates and coach.

collide: its cilley

apparently it has the hottest guys

Cilley is the "rich kid" dorm on campus. Like all stereotypes, it's kind of true but not always.

And re: cglen, NO. A thousand times no : P

hehe thats just what my friend said

I went to Exeter last summer for five weeks, and I was in Dow House. Dow House is normally a boys dorm, but over the summer, they used it as a girls. I liked it because it was rather small, and there's a nifty back passageway to the building where most of your classes will be. It's really handy when you're about to be late!
