Best format for teacher recommendations?

Do you think the Common Application Teacher Rec form is the way to go? Or is it preferable for the teacher to convey the student's strenghts etc. in a more free form letter?

Thanks for ideas.

Weenie:

I believe that good teachers' recs include both. Teachers check off the boxes that are appropriate but then write a longer letter that is appended to the standard form. This is where teachers draw comparisons ("best student in 25 years of teaching"), use anecdotes ("one incident illustrates xyz leadership qualities"), explain what the class was about, etc... and gush: "She's a winner. Admit her!"

Thanks marite. You always have good advice!
