Best FPF Courses

I'm an incoming FPF student for Fall 2014, and I'm just asking for advice on some classes to complete breadth with minimal stress. I am pursuing an Economics major with a Japanese minor. I scored a 3 for AP Calc AB, so I know that covers Math 16A or 1A. I have taken the appropriate courses and tests to fulfill the R&C, QR, Arts & Literature, Biological Science, Philosophy & Values, and Social & Behavioral Science requirements. The Japanese courses I will take in the future will fulfill the Foreign Language and International Studies requirements. Currently, these are the courses I have in mind:

Math 1B (Smith or Bourgoin)
Geography 30 (Trist) (Physical Science)
ESPM 50 (Spreyer) (American Cultures, Historical Studies)

Since my Calc AB covers Math 1A, will taking Math 1B complete my Math 1A-B sequence for the Economics major? I have seen many positive reviews for both Smith and Bourgoin, but who's better (in terms of clarity, work load, easier A)? Also, is Trist a good professor? I haven't seen many reviews for her or the class, for that matter. Any thoughts about Spreyer?

Yes, taking Math 1B will be sufficient for the economics major, although it you want to take the more-math Economics 101A-101B-141 series instead of 100A-100B-140 series, you need to take Math 53 and 54. If you are considering going on to an economics PhD program, Math 110 and 104 and Statistics 134 are also recommended.

Before using a 3 on AP calculus AB to skip Math 1A in order to take Math 1B, it is highly advisable to try the old Math 1A final exams to make sure that you really know the Math 1A material:

https://tbp.berkeley.edu/students/exams/math/1A/</a>

You do probably want to take four courses, as that would be a normal course load, so that you do not end up short on units. Note that AP credit cannot be used to satisfy the L&S 7-course breadth requirement, and only a 5 on AP English literature fulfills the entire L&S R&C requirement (a 4 on AP English literature or language fulfills the first half of the R&C requirement).

take math 16B instead of math 1B if you only score 3 of 5 from Cal AP which means you do not master the material in High school. score of 5 out of from AP AB/and BC was considered quite simple.

I thought about taking Math 16B a little bit after taking the diagnostic tests and rereading the course descriptions. I definitely feel it is the better option now. Since I’m in FPF, I’ll plan for Math 16B in the spring. Currently, my planned classes are: IB 33, SOC 3AC, ESPM 50AC, and EPS 80. Any further advice is much appreciated!

My son was in FPF this last year. He loved Math 1B with Smith. But he did receive a 5 on the BC exam. So 16B sounds like a good option for you. He also really enjoyed Music 27 with Foglesong. He’s considered one of the best instructors in FPF. FPF was a fantastic program for my son. I hope you’ll enjoy it too!
