What is the best dorm for freshmans and why?

It depends on what you mean by "best dorm". I was in Frederikson which is located in the Village my freshman year. It is like THE halfway point between classes on the quad and my business classes in showker. The village dorms are suite style and only three stories. The bad thing about the village and a few of the older dorms is that they do not have air conditioning, so August and September will be hell if you have one of those dorms.

If you were referring to amenities, then the newest dorms on the east side of campus would be the best. However, they are the farthest from the quad where most of your General Education classes are located and will have to walk the distance, take the bus, etc. It's not really a big deal unless you have like an 8 a.m. I suppose.

On the flip side the east side dorms are right next to the buildings where all the science stuff is so if your major is in that field, then you have the best of both worlds.

Hope I helped

Thanks for answering my post. I'm planning on business, so it sounds like I'll just have to deal with the awful heat in the Village. As far as the social scene goes, is there a particular dorm that tends to be more active socially than the others?

Socially… eagle but as far as amenities go, you will be on the bottom of the food chain. I lived there my freshman year (2 years ago) and had a blast. Its got close to 550 people in 7 floors, all freshman so you are bound to make a friend or two. Aside from the heat the first two weeks, it was well worth it. If you are more of the pampered type, I’d say the hillside dorms… fairly centrally located, AC, decent amount of tenants.

If I had my choice then, knowing what I know now about the dorms, I’d still live in eagle

Aren’t they randomly assigned for freshmen anyway?

I may have misunderstood, but I thought they said at Accepted Students’ Day that freshmen could choose an area of campus, but not a particular dorm.

Yeah can someone please clear this up. How are dorms selected?

You get to give them your priority list of the areas you want to live in, not particular dorms within the area. Of course, not everyone will get their top priority areas.

What are the best dorms ranked in order (bluestone, hillside, lake area, skyline, village)?

that’s a hard one.
almost each area has some really nice dorms and some not so good ones.
and like people have said, some dorms, like eagle, are GREAT socially, but not so great in the living conditions. It all really depends what you want, where most of your classes will be, etc.

yeah when the onebook asked me to rank my hall styles in order, i put bluestone. I heard they are nicest, and hopefully ill get into it because my one friend is living there this year

Daughter ranked Bluestone as first, followed by Skyline, Lakeside, Hillside, and Village. Not certain her reasonings but she was emphatic.

Daughter got Potomac. At least it’s AC but all of her classes are on the quad

My D is in Potomac too. That 8am class 3x a week across campus is going to be a challenge!!

Fortunately, she has 9 as an earliest…I think 12 two days a week. Her roommate is from New York.

My daughter is in Potomac also and she has 8:00am classes every day!

My D roomate is from Pittsburgh. Blue- let’s keep our fingers crossed about those 8am’s!!
