Best freshman dorms

Hi everyone,

I am going to be a freshman at UD this coming fall, and I was just wondering if any current students or former students have any opinions as to which dorms are the best for freshman to live in during their first year. I have heard good things and bad things about each, but I just wanted to gain some other opinions-

I have heard that George Read is really nice but is not as social and is further away from the campus than the other dorms
I have heard that Rodney is small, old, and not-so-nice, but has a great social atmosphere.
Everyone seems to like Russell Hall, and I haven't heard too much about the other dorms.

Hopefully this won’t be too long of a post.

East Campus:

Thompson/Lane: absolutely amazing. According to one of my friends the inside is laid out almost the same. I’ve never personally been in Thompson, though. Both have a massive kitchen (and I mean it’s like a normal-sized kitchen. I love it.)

Russel: this year they were honor dorms and look amazing as well. Not sure about the kitchen. There’s a lot more room than the regular ones. Not sure if they’re going to be honors this year.
The new dorms: obviously the new ones they just finished building are going to be extremely nice. Rumor is that they’re reserved specifically for honors housing, though. Not 100% sure since there wasn’t a public announcement regarding such.

Harrington: Also have a nice layout. The rooms are z-shaped and there are shelves built along one of the walls that is nice.

Perkins (which is a mini “trabant”) is literally five seconds away from all the dorms and have insanely cheap Dunkin Donuts. The dining hall (Russel) is also one of the best dining halls. It does get packed on the weekends though, since Kent is closed.

East campus imo is probably the best place for freshman housing.

West Campus:
Rodney/Dickinson: Avoid these dorms at all costs. The rooms are insanely small and everything seems so far away from where you need to go. If you don’t mind walking and are okay with a generally trashed area, then you won’t have a problem. Also worth mentioning is that the train literally runs five or so times a day. You get used to it after a while, but otherwise it’s super annoying.

North campus: I’ve never actually been in one of the dorms, but from what I’m told all of the dorms are really nice. Don’t hear too many positive things regarding the Christiana Towers, though. Independence is extremely sought after once you’re an upperclassmen. George Reed (from what I’m told) is mainly full of athletes, but there are exceptions I’m sure. It’s also air conditioned so that’s nice.

Overall socially and room-spaced wise I think anything on East Campus is your best bet. I wish I had roomed there >.< It is a little bit of a walk, too. Depending on which dorm you get. The night walk from the library to east campus is also a bit creepy, so make sure you walk with a friend or something.

I hope this is helpful enough!
