What 4-year Texas universities have the best geology programs?

Also, if I am not able to get into the top geology programs, and I go to a school with less renown for their geology program, will I be as likely to be hired as students who come from top geology programs?

Thanks for the help.

PS: Do University of Houston, University of Texas El Paso, and University of Texas Permian Basin have good geology programs? I might consider applying for these colleges...

I don’t know very much about geology, but there’s two easy metrics to evaluate the strength of a department.

The first is the number of faculty in the department. More professors = more classes, more resources, more research activity. The number of geology professors at the universities you inquired about:

UT Permian Basin: 5
UT El Paso: 16
University of Houston: 50

The second are US News graduate rankings, which tell you about the reputation of the department in the academic community. (The graduate rankings are solely based on survey responses of faculty in the field.) Here are all of the Texas universities which were ranked in the Earth Science category:

6 UT Austin

25 Rice University

32 Texas A&M - College Station

63 University of Houston

69 Southern Methodist University

89 Texas Tech

89 UT Dallas

89 UT El Paso

108 Baylor University

not ranked: UT Permian Basin
