D1 is interested in oil exploration and subterrean rocks. Which schools would be able to offer her a substantial major in these subjects- and what types of jobs could she expect to get? I am a newbie on this so any help educating me is appreciated!

There are many schools that have strong earth science departments. Since there are no undergraduate department rankings, looking at the graduate rankings (USNWR or NRC) will give you some idea of which departments are strong in earth sciences. Then to narrow it down for your D’s particular interest, look at schools/depts. in major oil-producing states (e.g., TX, CA, OK, LA, perhaps CO, KS). Also, consider which schools in those states are both strong in earth sciences and offer related programs, such as petroleum and gas engineering.

Here are schools with Petroleum or gas engineering; match them up with schools that are strong in earth sciences/geology: Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Tulsa, Stanford, Colorado Mines, UCB, LSU (Lafayette), Missouri U of Science & Technology (Rolla), Kansas, USC, Pittsburgh, LSU, Wyoming, New Mexico Tech, Houston, Penn State, Montana Tech, Alaska, West Virginia; in Canada—Calgary, Alberta, Memorial U of Newfoundland.

I had jotted some down for D for grad school, from USNWR’s (Geology) Earth Sciences:

University of Arizona (Tucson)
University of Michigan (Ann Arbor)
Penn State
Univ of Texas-Austin
Stanford
Cal. Institute Technology
MIT
Univ of Wisconsin
Univ CA - Berkeley
Harvard
Univ of Washington (Seattle)
