Best housing for transfer students?

I just found out a couple of days ago that I got accepted to COM (!!!), and I have to fill out the housing form soon. I’ve heard that it’s harder to meet people as a transfer student, so I’d like to live somewhere that’s conducive to getting to know people. However, I’d prefer not to live in a mostly-freshmen dorm, and I’d rather be among a lot of sophomores if possible.

Objectively speaking, Myles Standish is my favorite hall for what it is; I like the story behind it, and it’s pretty funky looking given its unique shape. How difficult is it to meet people there, if I make an effort? I’m a very social person, so I hope it wouldn’t be too hard, but I don’t know if it’s one of those dorms where people are never around. Are there certain dorms that are better for this? Is there anything else I should know?

(Oh yeah… and is transportation too difficult if I’m living all the way at one end of campus?)

Other transfer students-- what have you guys heard? Where are you thinking about living?

P.S.-- Are there any dorms I should try to avoid that make meeting people really difficult? (Or that just plain aren’t great spaces to live?)

the best places to live if you want to meet people would probably be west campus, warren towers, and maybe the towers. 575 commonwealth is notorious for being antisocial, but any dorm that’s mostly upperclassmen is like that. west, warren, and towers are your best bets.

i agree with niesels! also, do NOT live in shelton hall. it is super hard to meet people there since everyone just keeps their doors shut!

I don’t mean to hijack this thread but instead of starting up a whole new one, can anyone tell me about on-campus apartments and what the rates are like?

Is it cheaper to live on campus? I am a grad student so I am looking for a cheap studio or one bedroom around campus.

Thanks

I’m a transfer as well and I’m leaning towards Warren, since I’m going to CAS. I know it seems annoying that you’ll be older than everyone else but when you get there you won’t even notice the age difference. Everyone’s in college. It’s not like high school. So one year won’t make a huge difference. If you’re looking for somewhere social, I’ve only heard good things about Warren and West.

It’s not that I think it would be bad to live among freshmen, it’s just that I think it would be helpful to live with people who know the ins and outs of BU life and might be able to give me some advice. West is definitely on my list though, it seems pretty cool… I like how close it is to the gym, and the fact that it’s actually on a field, but it’s not near COM at all.

where do most juniors live?

i would really warn against living with anyone but freshmen. like alectricity mentioned, it’s hard to meet people because they keep their doors shut. you won’t meet as many people as you would think. it’s a better idea to just figure the ins and outs on your own with other new students.

Hi,

I’m transfering to BU next year for my last undergraduate year, as an exchange student form Switzerland. I was wondering if anyone could give me some feedback regarding the student village, and more precisely Harry Agganis Way.

Thanks for your help!

So you’re saying that living with freshmen would be the best bet?

i think if you’re transferring to be a soph then yes. But I’ll be a junior transfer so I honestly have no desire to live with freshmen…

I’m going to be a junior, but I guess I wouldn’t mind living with freshmen/sophomores/juniors mixed.

I am gonna be a junior as well. Does anyone know whether any of the BU dorms are dry dorms?

Uh, drinking happens in almost every dorm haha. If you are 21 it doesn’t matter, but if you are under 21, you’ll be fine unless you are stupid and let yourself get caught while pre-gaming.

I think you’re correct in picking Myles Standish as your first pick. It’s a great dorm and has a dining hall on site. I would stay away from Warren Towers and or West Campus- especially if you are transferring as a junior. I was also a transfer student to BU and I lived at Danielson Hall. It has beautiful views of the Charles River/Esplanade if you live on the backside of the campus. The rooms are large and have character since the building was apartments before it was a BU dorm. The rooms are suites with bathrooms between two rooms or there are home style hall bathrooms which are private as oppose to new dorms where you have multi sinks/stalls and showers in one room. It’s a distance from campus. I used to have to walk to West Campus for most of my classes but it was a great way to get exercise. Since you will be in COM that the walk would not be too far. Towers is more centrally located but the rooms are very small. Each dorm has it’s own personality as to who it attracts.

I thought Myles no longer has a dining hall due to the new one built behind Hojo…?

Do you guys know if a transfer student have a fair chance of getting into the apartments or the brownstones?

@lalaz1000, you’re right, all the dining halls on campus besides West, Warren, and the new one behind Hojo are closed now.

Well iPod I hope so since I applied for the apartments and brownstones as well. You most likely will get a brownstone in south, but it may be FAAR from campus. They own tons of brownstones that are a bit of the ways off from campus. That’s why I put east campus apartments and bay state brownstones as my top choices xD!
