Best housing?

most "party-ish" are hill and quad just because there are so many freshmen there. the people in kings court, etc usually venture out more to the quad/hill.

the bathrooms are seriously dirty in both places. i think hill seems a little dirtier and its kinda gross with no air conditioning but its also nice because there's a dining hall inside and everyone at hill seems so close, unlike at the quad where that doesn't always happen.

also, i didnt know this coming in, but there are A LOT of singles. if you dont mind, apply for one because i think it increases your chances getting in where you want to live and most people end up wishing they had singles.

any comments on the idea of requesting a "triple"? I had a penn alumni recommend this to me but a single sounds more like wha i want... so what's the deal with a "triple"??

yeah i was thinking about harrison but so many people are telling me its not good for freshman year. i looked on penn's website and they had some info about all the college houses and harrison has a "Freshman experience" program and around 90 freshman live there. isnt it possible to still have the freshman experience like at the quad, minus the filth?
again, "people" are saying that qaud and hill are social but with over 90 freshman cant you still be social and even make friends with the upperclassman there?

I doubt requesting a single increases your chances of getting into the Quad. I have friends who requested only singles. One got stuck with her 4th choice after the Quad, Stouffer single. Another got placed into a Kings Court double even though it wasn't on his list. If you really want a single and don't mind the lack of AC and slightly worse accomidations, trying to get a large single in Hill is the best way to go. You get a normal Hill double, just one bed and one desk.

I wouldn't request a triple in the quad. Adjusting to one other person in the room is tough enough, but two is harder. You also risk either being the odd one out, or the only one without a significant other and constatnly sexiled.

About Harrison Freshman Experience, it's not the same as the Quad or Hill or Kings Court. Part of what helps you make so many friends in the Hill, and the other places, is the fact that it's traditional dorm style. Your rooms are small and kind of suck. It encourages you to spend time in lounges and common rooms, and you make more friends from it. If you don't live in the Quad or Hill, you'll probably end up making friends in those buildings and spending all of your time there. The Quad (and Hill) really isn't that dirty. One benefit is that there is a cleaning staff to take care of the bathroom. If you end up with drunkard roommates freshman year in a highrise, it's your problem if they puke all over your bathroom Wednesday-Saturday nights. Leave the high rises for sophomore year.

okay thanks for clearing up the fact that it's not COMPLETELY random! but everyone seems to be saying that singles are better than doubles... but why? my thought was that it'd be harder with a single since you don't have the safety at least of your roommate

What safety with roommates? I've seen plenty of roommates fight, regardless of if they were random roommates or if they requested eachother from high school/facebook. There are lots of situations when it works well, and there are just as many where the two can't stand eachother.

I had a single last year and loved it. I never had to worry about waking up my roommate, my roommate waking me up, being sexiled, having to sexile someone, having to deal with someone else's filth, someone else's friends constantly being over, etc. There are a lot of negatives to having a roommate. With a single you have your own space and all that good stuff. You will make friends, it just takes more effort the first few days if you have a single. I'd say all of my friends who had singles liked it. Many of my friends who had doubles wished they had a single after a few months at school, regardless of how much they liked their roommate. It's nice to have your own space. It's good to have the roommate experience too, but you'll survive not having to live with a random person for a year.

There are more singles than you'd realize, but there is also WAY more capacity in doubles by virtue of the fact that there are two people in every double...

Requesting a single won't help you get into the house of your choice (and will probably hurt your chances, to be honest), but there are a LOT of merits to living in a single. Freshman year is about the only time anyone tolerates living in a double bedroom - it just gets old so fast, and it's nice to be able to have some privacy and some control over your life.

I would stay away from triples - there are many situations in life where you want to avoid "threes" because two of the people can "gang up" on the third. Housing is that kind of situation. (That said, a "triple" in the high rises is something entirely different, where you usually each have your own bedroom. A triple in the quad is 3 people sharing one (large) bedroom).

how's the co-ed situation in the dorms and what not... is there ever a problem having girls in ur room (if ur a guy) or guys in ur room (if ur a girl... or if ur a guy and thats what ur into) and like what time if any do they have to be out of ur room? are the floors co-ed?

Penn is probably as liberal as it gets when it comes to co-ed housing. There are no rules, whatsoever. No times, no nothing. After your freshman year, you can even live co-ed in a room (ie, one girl and one guy sharing a room). Most of the bathrooms in the quad are also "gender neutral".

gets excited about the possibility of being accepted to Penn

;)

that's awesome... so this is typically the part where i'd ask how the girls r at penn but im gonna leave it alone because i'd rather find out for myself haha... but gender-neutral bathrooms? so i could be pent-up in a stall without any toilet paper when some babe walks into the bathroom...?

... if you didn't check the toilet level before you went. which i always recommend.

damn... hahahaha

yeah if i listed the skills ive learned at college in chronological order, that one would be near the top of the list

Thats why I used my own toilet paper when I lived in the quad. Me and 2 other guys in my hall started that. 2 ply is heaven, and you never have to worry about running out. Our other hall mates looked at us funny when we ran around with rolls of toilet paper though.

That's brilliant! I'm bringing some back to Hill.

bumppp
this is a good thread

Double Bump:
i propose that this thread be pinned to the first page as it is excellent and because too many duplicate threads are being created when all the info is on here....

this could develop into a good resource for prospective Penn students

lmao @ "sexiled"
