Best Jobs to Have on Campus

What are the best jobs to have at UCSD?
Considering things such as hours/flexibility, how fun/boring the job is, etc

Not Programmer Analyst I at Pediatrics

All my friends who have ever worked at the bookstore really love it. My friends that are getting paid as TA’s like it a lot also.

Being an undergraduate TA has its ups and downs. It pays well (and number of hours worked is all honor system) and you have a bit of freedom as to when you work (i.e., grade papers, hold office hours, meet with professors, etc.). However, this can be a HUGE pain sometimes since grading time can conflict with your coursework and reduce quantity/quality of your own studying. This has happened quite a few times for me, so I eventually reduced my TAing to only during summer sessions.

Also, it’s easy to get your first stint as an undergraduate TA (since all you get are units), but getting a second (and paid) appointment as a TA is much more competitive and difficult.

Theft prevention @ the bookstore = 2nd highest paying on campus job, $10.75/hr

1 is shuttle driver, $8/hr during training & $12.85/hr regularly.

I think working at the dining hall would be the worst- it’s tiring, dirty, and you get paid 8/hr, but it’s also easy to get hired.

Most on campus jobs will accommodate to your schedule and to how many hours a week you want to work.

@emeraldgem: Some UCSD Recreation Assistants get 11.25 and it is probably one of the most chill jobs on campus. Especially the ones on the second level of main gym. Its fairly hard to get hired though. They answer phone calls about rec classes and make sure all classes run smoothly Not the guys who swipe ID’s on the bottom floor.

Look for something with work study, if you are eligible. I have had two work study jobs both paying $12 an hour, (one off campus, one on).

Out of curiosity, has anyone on here been a shuttle driver? It pays well, but I imagine it gets very tiring driving a bus around a loop for hours.

The IT jobs are by far the highest paid and the most fun jobs on campus. You can find them using Port Triton. If you are lucky, you’ll also learn a lot in the process.
