Hi i'm an incoming freshman who would like to know more about type of (part-time) jobs UCSD students take on.

1.So what are some usual/common jobs students take on campus?
How early in the year can we apply and what are procedures?
wages?
working hours?
Are there opp. for growth?

2.Also, what are some "quaint" /"interesting" jobs students have taken, because when i visited UCSD, i remember my student tour guide telling us about a student run cafe/shop as well as being paid to write for UCSD's school magazine/newspaper agency - which was located near the "student run cafe/shop as well!"

Some of the jobs my friends had at UCSD were dining hall worker, shuttle driver, IT person/computer programmer, RA (Resident Advisor), orientation leader, campus tour guide, TA (Teaching Assistant), bookstore worker, library worker… there’s probably more but I can’t remember right now. I myself was a calculus tutor in the Math department. The wages will definitely vary, depending on the job you have, so I can’t comment too much on that. Most are probably slightly above minimum wage? Working hours, again that depends on the job, but most jobs geared for students are flexible. Employers know that you have classes at random times, and that your schedule changes from quarter to quarter, so they’ll usually give you a range of times that you can work, and then you choose your specific working hours. In regards to opportunity for growth, it definitely exists in certain jobs. For instance, if you decide to work as an RA, you can eventually become a “lead” RA if you are qualified enough, and you’ll get paid more/have more responsibility. Or if you decide to work at a dining hall, you might be able to work up from student worker to student manager. I’m sure there are other examples of this as well.

Yes, we have co-ops and a student-run newspaper. Here are links for each of those things:

Those links also have information for those interested in working there. You can probably also visit those places in person once school starts, and ask them how it’s like to work there, and if they are hiring.
