Yes, I get a percentage of the waiters' tips - I think it's 10%, per restaurant policy. All the tips are collected and divided among the waiters and busboys working in a particular section of the restaurant.

The restaurant I work in isn't ultra-classy, but it is very popular (we keep all the tables filled, long lines, almost impossible to get a table on a weekend without a reservation). Entrees run $15-25 I think. People tend to tip generously.

My older brother worked at UPS doing the box lifting for about 6 years - he hated it. Yes, he got nice arms and it helped him stay in shape, but other than that...not so much. The work gets very very tiring, especially in the summer. Normally, you're lifting 20+lb boxes into trucks in 100 degree weather...and it's not just one box, you're working for 5-6 hours doing that. It's not uncommon to have people pass out on the job. I mean, the people there are pretty good about that and everything, but there's not much they can do to turn the weather down a few degrees, ya know? That was my brother's main complaint...he's met a lot of interesting people, so he has enjoyed that part of it. Overtime during the holidays is pretty good pay, too.

Babysitting is a good way to make money almost effortlessly. I charge $10/hour, and usually make $40/night (but have made up to $60 in a single night). Usually that means two hours of actual babysitting between 7 pm and 9 pm (bedtime), then doing homework or watching television for the rest of the time. It's only once every few weeks, though, so I've been looking for another job that's a bit more reliable. I just interviewed at Starbucks, so hopefully that'll work out. I also tutor once a week for $15/hour.

Ah yes. Lots to be said for babysitting. If the kids are older than 8 or so, it's $10/hour to eat pizza and watch tv. Great if parents have a standing appointment every week, but otherwise the real downfall of babysitting is the lack of regularity.
**Also, the older you are, the more money you can make babysitting. I babysat quite a lot when I was about 13 and got maybe $6/hour. When I turned 18 I discovered that I had suddenly become a much more desirable babysitter (drivers license for one, plus 18 connotes responsibility) and parents would go out of their way to work with my schedule and expect to pay me a few dollars more per hour than they would a 14-year-old.

Another pretty popular thing where I live is chauffeuring kids around. A lot of parents work, and if kids are old enough to be home alone but not old enough to drive a lot of parents will pay HS students with drivers licenses to pick their kids up from soccer practice, etc, and may help with other things on occasion. Kind of like a pseudo-nanny. This is good if you can make it work with your EC schedule, and it's a more regular thing.

i work at starbucks, its a fun job for having to work with food (i have worked at a pastry shop, and at a catering company...i disliked both, and the catering company was too much work for only $7/hr).

starbucks is cool because of the nice co-workers, the benefits (as much free coffee as you want while you work, discounts when you are not working, a free pound of coffee/or box of tazo tea a week, and if you are concerned with insurance and stuff like that they are also good), and the flexibility for HS students. Yea you have to clean, but its really not bad, most of the time is either spent on the register (high-tech/easy to use) or making drinks (pretty fun, easy to learn). you start at like 7.25, are guaranteed a raise every 6 months (only like 20 cents), BUT YOU GET TIPS which makes it like $9/hr or more. tips largely depend on the store: more busy = more tips :)

ustas06: That sounds quite nice; I do hope they decide to hire me. I think my interview went decently, so we'll see.

The Starbucks next to my school isn't that busy, but a lot of people (students and teachers) from my school go there, so maybe they'll sympathy tip me. The fact that I'm a classic (blue-eyed, honey blonde) Scandinavian girl may also be advantageous... I'm sort of kidding, but sort of not. :D

The only problem with babysitting is you don't normally see guys doing it and I could imagine many parents being reluctant to hire a guy over a girl.

Babysitting is a beautiful thing...especially if you babysit when the kids are sleeping. One of my friends had the most amazing job- her neighbor worked the night shift at a hospital, so my friend would come over at 9:30 (the kids were already asleep) and do whatever she wanted until she was tired. Then, she would just sleep in their guest bedroom until their mom came home in the morning. She got $10 (two kids) twice a week for the whole summer!

What about working at Chile's or Applebees or Big Boy? I know someone with a friend who works at the Palace of Auburn Hills where the Detroit Pistons play. He sees all of their games and any concerts and other events that he works. Now that sounds like a nice job. I'd like to work at a baseball field as a peanut person. That would be fun.

I used to be a page at the public library. It was amazing, but it took up too much time, and it was more cost-effective for me to use that time to apply for scholarships. I hope to work there again this summer. It's quiet and everyone is nice, which made for a fantastic working environment. The pay wasn't bad either. I miss it.

mwbashful18, I worked at a Big Boy restaurant one summer and it was the worst! Hard work, on your feet all the time, and you came home smelling like grease. Tips weren't so great either--the worst were tables of kids after ball games who kept demanding things and hardly ever left tips.

I work in a vet's office...the hours are great (after school 'til about 5:30) and I'm paid 6.50 and hour for work that isn't difficult at all, plus it's something in which I'm interested. :)

Ahaha. Someone said something about not getting a job at Kumon? Well, yours truly -just- got a job there. Starting pay's $7/hr, and I work only 1 day a week (since the center in my town is only open two days a week, and I can't make the other day). It's not that bad, either, since the older kids are fun to joke around with.

Yeah, I would be interested in getting a job as a Princeton Review SAT tutor... how would you do that?
I have a job at a top furniture store, and I love it. I am what you'd call a guest service rep, and since there is also an IMAX theater at the store, I do a variety of jobs... such as handing out mardi gras beads (cause the theme of the store is New Orleans), making ice creams etc. in the street car, performing the Mardi Gras shows, and working up at the theater. Starting pay is $8/$12 on sundays/$20 on holidays and the people are great. All the managers are super nice, you can joke around with them and everything. Sweet benefits as well. I love it... best of all.. I only have to work weekends cause it's a weekend rotation.

i waitress at this super busy Friendly's and i make mad tips...it's not too hard but it can get really stressful/overwhelming at times. i used to work at a dog track, where i would get the dogs ready for races then after the race bring them to their trainers, and that paid $8 per hour.
