best laptop for a student with little $$

hey cc'ers

i was wondering if u guys could please help me find a laptop that would fit my budget (like $400-600) for college.

recently i got a gateway, amd athlon ii x2 m300, 4 gb ram, 500 gb harddrive, ati radeon hd 4200, wireless 802.11 b/g/n, 15.6" led widescreen for 500!

great deal right?

the mouse pad sucks!!!!.......i have an external mouse, but its kinda tedious carrying a separate mouse around everywhere u go...like on a train, in ur bed-external/wireless mice are basically supposed to be used on hard surfaces...im a pretty lazy guy so i usually lie down and use my laptop lol. i'm prolly going to end up returning my gateway back to best buy.

but in the mean time,
i would really appreciate it if u could help me find a deal or two that would fit my budget
thanks :D

gateways make computers with great features for the buck.
Unfortunately, it’s not the most reliable brand. That’s why I usually tell people to buy brand names for electronics if you don’t know what’s what.

I say one of Eee pc for a netbook (I’m considering your budget)

I second the netbook suggestion. If you take the train a lot I would recommend getting a network card with the money you save :)

Your budget indicates that you may probably go with a netbook.

However, try searching around Newegg or TigerDirect. They very often have great deals. Newegg is really great at delivery turnaround, too.

How’s this seem to you: [lenovo G550](<a href=“Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more - Newegg.com”>Lenovo Laptop Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 3GB Memory 320GB HDD Intel GMA 4500MHD 15.6" Windows XP Professional preinstalled with Windows 7 Professional Upgrade Option G550(2958-A4U) - Newegg.com)

It’s right at your price range, well without taxes. You won’t be able to do heavy gaming with this, but it should be adequate enough. I really don’t know your goals or expectations.

FYI: Placing your laptop on a bed may cause it to block the vents/cause bad air circulation and cause it to overheat. It’s best to place it on a hard, flat surface.

I’m using a Samsung NC20, a cross between a netbook and smaller notebooks. 12" screen which is big enough for me, and it was $400.

You can get a basic Toshiba within that range…and Toshiba was recently rated one of the top brands for computers.
