I am a high school sophomore trying to decide upon an undergraduate major for college. I know which two universities I’d like to attend, (either Ohio State University or Bowling Green State University), but I can’t choose between three different majors. I’ve taken pretty much every test out there and I show an equal aptitude for Music, Psychology, and Communications. Which of these majors would be the best for getting into law school?
Oh, and I’d like to add that I realize that I can change my major should I choose; however I’d like to be as prepared as possible when it comes to my future.
None. Law schools don’t care about your major. Employers might, however, so you should consider that in selecting a major.
You’re just a sophomore, there’s no rush to decide and preferences change. I think it’s important if you’re absolutely set on law school to consider two factors when making choices in undergrad:
- Admittance into law school school: law schools generally care way more for your GPA than major. However, they may be more forgiving of a slightly lower GPA if you choose a major that is notoriously "difficult." You should choose a major that interests you and that you can do well in. If you're not positive about law school then also choose a major where you would be satisfied with career options.
- Preparation for law school: some argue that humanities majors best prepare you for law school because of the practice reading, analyzing and writing. Others argue that "dense" majors are more rigorous and get you used to taking on a hard and heavy course load. Others look at the average LSAT scores by major, a list you can easily find with a Google search, although keep in mind that it's a correlation not causation. It could be true that studying Physics prepares you best for the LSAT or it could be true that those who choose to study Physics are just better students/test takers. I'd be wary about choosing a major based on the average LSAT score.
Lagging is 100% correct. Your major does matter, at least insofar as it shows how sharp you are. Having a 3.8 in astrophysics from MIT clearly shows brains. Having a 3.8 in Soap Opera Watching from Junk State does not.
