Thank you @camtmom ! AMDA has some nice representation in musicals too. I wish more people posted of their experiences there.
@lovetoact I think more parents of AMDA students are hesitant to post because of the reputation it has (sometimes unfairly) been given. I have been a little offended by some of the comments made on other threads. A little background: I have “lurked” on this sight for the past two years. I have received SO much helpful information that I now feel it is time to come out of my lonely closet, join in, and thank everyone who has ever given advice and helpful hints to a parent who knew NOTHING about the college MT world. What an education! My S ended up choosing AMDA after several college visits, open houses, and a few auditions (with 2 acceptances to other, lower tiered, programs as a matter of fact). He was an excellent student (3.99 GPA, 1900 SAT, 4 AP classes, all tests with 3 or better), so academic admission wasn’t a concern. He is now an MT BFA student at the LA campus. I know AMDA had the rep of admitting “Anyone”, but it simply isn’t true now (it was in the past I know). They are so swamped with applications these days that they do have to be more selective. The day my son auditioned, there were 18 other hopefuls there also. Only 3 were admitted. He will be entering his 3rd semester, doing the NY experience, this summer (he took this semester off because he never got a summer break between high school and the start of college, and he didn’t want to go to NY in the winter). So, after two semesters, we can honestly say the level of training he has received is phenomenal. His private voice teacher was a past president of NATS, and his MT 1 teacher was the longest running Phantom on Broadway. All of the instructors are working professionals. We look at some of his past performances on DVD, and he has excelled beyond those early performances. His voice is so much more trained after only 2 semesters ( he had taken voice and piano lessons since he was 6 years old). To try and wrap this up, that is probably why you don’t hear from AMDA parents much. We are here, reading everything for the information. We are very happy with the training. We just know from reading other’s comments that they don’t share our opinion.
@CAMTMom2019, you can be the AMDA cheerleader! It sounds like your son is getting a great experience!
Of course what is most glaringly missing is the MOST POPULAR and MOST DIFFICULT to find tickets Broadway Musical – HAMILTON. Entirely written, scored and lead acted by Lin Manuel Miranda from Wesleyan.
In fact if you listen to his commencement speech from last year – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b5GGiSI2gE
He emphatically talks about the theatre major at Wesleyan and how it made him who he is today.
Shouldn’t NYU’s list be the largest because they have the most students enrolled?
That’s because this is a list of plays, not musicals.
Thanks for this @lovetoact! FYI-- Jeff Daniels attended Central Michigan University and was active in theater there. He didn’t graduate from Central. He left to pursue professional work and never returned.
@camtmom one thing I’ve always wondered about AMDA is whether they offer financial aid? I’m sorry for my ignorance!
@Regulus7 do you mean Lin is missing from the ‘musicals’ list? Because the list I posted is of plays so he wouldn’t be on that. Sorry for my confusion if you’re not referring to my list!
@HappyDancer98 thanks for that info!
Jeff Daniels was a theatre mentor & friend to the guy who directed me in HS. He was a year or two ahead. Terry O’Quinn (TV’s ‘Lost’) was also part of that Central Michigan theatre crew.
Another thing that I liked learning (but that I didn’t list) was that several actors on this list were not theater majors undergrad. There were English, Philosophy, and Business majors.
@lovetoact Thank you for the opportunity to provide a little insight into the AMDA parent world. It’s great that you gave me my segue-way. Yes, financial aid is offered. First is an artistic scholarship that is auditioned for (up to $10,000/year). Otherwise it’s the usual federal and state financial aid (loans, Pell Grant, CAL grant, etc). And you are right about the alumni presence in musicals. There are currently 40 on Broadway now or in the past year.
Would love to see the MT list updated for 2015/2016 too
A 2015 Northwestern grad is the new Boq in Wicked. Go Cats!
PACE has a great program. It is my top choice. Right now, they have alumni in Wicked, The Sound of Music (Tour) and even TV/Film. BAL to everyone.
I’ve lurked on this thread for such a long time because there’s such great info here. Since everyone here is really knowledgeable on MT programs I was wondering if you could give me some info on Webster and AMDA if you have any? My friend attends AMDA and loves it but with the sketchy background and criticisms I’m a bit skeptical. I was also admitted to Webster for MT and although I visited I can’t really find additional information on their program and alumni either. I was also admitted into Point Park but not for acting or MT but for a B.A. in theater arts so that’s more of a backup plan. It’s been hard choosing between my options because I can’t find a lot of recent info on these programs. I’m sorry if this is kind of irrelevant, there’s just such great knowledge and advice here I figured I should try to ask
@CAMTMom2019 I was also admitted for a B.F.A in MT there! It’s so cool to hear that your son has had such a good experience! I’ve heard so many negative things so it’s nice to hear a different perspective. I’ve been lurking on this thread for so long because successful alumni are important to me when choosing programs, but I’ve noticed a few of AMDA’s more notable grads (ie; Nina Ariadna) have achieved the most after transferring. Would you say this is a general trend? For example; would most of the alumns of AMDA on Broadway have finished their 2/ 4 years only at AMDA or as a transfer between the two? TIA!
@lovetoact thanks so much for all of the info you compiled! It’s great that you included the MFA as well because I think it’s important to keep in mind that transferring and grad school are also great options for performing arts students. I hate to ask because you already did so much work, but do you have any more information on AMDA and/or Webster’s representation in musicals? Or could you direct me to some resources to get some of the detailed info you so kindly put together for everyone? I’m trying to get some more recent information because I’m currently deciding between these MT programs and there’s very little written about them… especially within the past two or three years. TIA I feel like a spammer right now… I hope I’m not annoying anyone with my constant pleas for knowledge
@Lydaria- check out the Webster thread if you haven’t already. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/webster-university-mt/
