kfc4u, I'm a CA resident and may be CA-centric, but I would agree that anyone who places Penn State (overall) on par with UCLA needs to get their head examined.

Ranking a school number 50 in the nation does not make it "so low" and no where did I say it was better than UCLA. All I am saying is that is ranked just as high as UT-Austin according to US News. And who are you to know what Penn State alums would think?

maf5000, I think what kfc4u is saying is that Penn State is ranked low in the eyes of CC posters, who sometimes it seems, think anything not in the ivy league or anything not listed in College Confidential's "top colleges" list is crap. Obviously, we CC'ers have a very skewed perception of things. Certainly, the fact that Penn State is ranked #50 places it among the top 1% of all colleges in the nation; quite a distinguished thing.

thank you themegastud, that was the point i was trying to make.

our perceptions are skewed. our rankings outside of HYPSM would probably NOT match up with the general public's. in fact, our rankings among each other would not match up with each other, nor would the general public's from the east coast match up with the general public's from the south, midwest, or west.
