Best Schools for a Combination of Arts and Traditional Education?

Not sure how I should have phrased it, but I am trying to find some schools that would give me a great mixture of both a really good education as well as having a very good art program. What has really stood out to me so far has been WashU, and the Brown-Risd Dual degree program would be amazing (unfortunately so hard to get into).

I think I've heard that Yale is good, but not sure. I am also looking into Liberal Arts Schools (which unfortunately tend to seem to have less of a focus on visual arts) so any ones with good arts programs would be great too.

what are you doing for the summer?
have you decided on it?
I think it helps if you’d tell folks what kind of academics (math science or humanities)
what kind of art (fine/ photo painting 3D film or tech or commercial/ graphic design illustration )
I am guessing from what you been asking; you seem got numbers, money and credentials (let’s here now forget about TASP it alone doesn’t really help) you might have shot at dual, if that’s what you want to do the most.
If you are Brown kind of kid and a boy, PLEASE go to Wesleyan for me if doesn’t work out.

Not so favored here but Tufts/SMFA Boston, Reed/PNCA if you want other dual option.
If you are math science nerd, CMU
In the past there were few smarties chose UMich, Northwestern, Vassar, NYU(non NYer), Bard, Williams
And there are also mystery Cal Unis if you want to go that far, I never get them right which is good for what, there are some kingpin/ expert in that side of the continent, ask them.

This is a tough one, and one my daughter is wrestling with right now. It’s hard to find a perfect combination, so you might look for - a university that offers a BFA so you know you’ll get enough arts experience, an art school in a consortium or one that offers a dual degree, or the elusive LAC with a very good BA art major.

The LAC option seems the most risky, but also gives you the most options of schools. There are all sorts of opinions about different LAC’s so the best thing you can do is visit for yourself, correspond with a current student, or try to find current student work online.

It seems like lots of schools and universities have a BA in art and then offer an MFA. What a tease! It’s hard to know then whether Yale, Columbia, UMD or any other place like this is a truly worthwhile place for an undergrad in the arts compared to a school that offers a BFA.

Maybe we could start a list of universities (and colleges) that offer the BFA without being a straight up art school.

I can think of 3 - WUSTL, CMU, and Alfred.

My D thought WUSTL was a bit too much of a pre-med school, and Alfred a bit too much of a tech school (besides the art program). She visited CMU but didn’t apply.

i guess it depends on the kind of art, and the kind of liberal arts, that you are interested in.

My S looked into (with the intention of getting a BFA)
CMU
Syracuse
VCU
WUSTL

Also, Temple w/Tyler school of art.

wagsthedog,

There are many MANY universities that would meet your requirements. Some of the best might include Yale, UCLA, Carnegie Mellon, VCU and USC. But you can also find solid art programs at most of the other top universities. It’s tough to recommend because you haven’t given us much detail to work with.
