I've been struggling with a lot of stuff in terms of college lately, and I know this is really last minute, but I'm desperate! Any help would be much appreciated!

I get pretty good grades and I want to go to a school that has lots of academic subjects like biology, etc. but I would also like to minor in art. I'm afraid that I either have to choose an academically rigorous course and sacrifice my love of art or go to art school and not get to do the other stuff I love.

Does anyone know of any intellectually challenging schools that also have really good art courses? I already know about the Brown and RISD combination option, but unfortunately my grades are not THAT pristine, so I don't think Brown is an option for me. Also, I'd preferably like to only have to attend one school at a time, but it's fine if there's something I could work out like the Brown and RISD thing.

SUNY New Paltz is a liberal arts university with a great art dept. You could major in biology if you wished amd minor in any of the arts. My son transferred here and what he loves is that even though he is an art major, he takes classes in other areas that he is interested in. The environment is creative overall, so that is a nice plus.

I’m not an expert on the subject, but what are your preferences as far as in state/out of state (what state?), public/private, small liberal arts college/big university? That might help people come up with schools that would be a good fit for you. I know when I was in the same boat I was told that U of Cincinnati, Syracuse, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Carnegie Mellon are just a few of the many colleges with really good art programs. I ended up going to an art college though. Good luck!

I’m not too picky about my other criteria, but if I could have everything I’d like it to ideally be in New York or somewhere else in the northeast. A small to medium sized liberal arts college would be nice, but honestly at this point I feel like being too picky about that would limit my choices.
Thanks a bunch for all the suggestions! I’ll definitely look them up right away!

How about Bard? Sarah Lawrence too (but it is small not medium). Hampshire leaves you free to create your own concentration. Lots of arty kids go to Wesleyan. It’s not the easiest to get in though. You’ve got to get moving quickly huh?

blaze, there are several small liberal arts colleges that have excellent academics – including sciences – and excellent art departments. There is absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t get everything you want.

I would suggest: Williams, Weselyan, Hamilton, Kenyon, Skidmore, Conn College, Oberlin. Smith if you are female.

These cover a range of selectivity. I hope you have prepared an art portfolio as a supplement as this counts highly at LACs even if you’re not intending to major in art.

Thank you guys so much! These ideas are really helpful, I’ve been so stressed out but this is making me feel a lot better.

Haha, I know I need to get going on these applications, but I’ve been trying to find information like this forever and I only found this site a few days ago! And yeah, I’ve already assembled my portfolio, hopefully it’s good enough.

I’ve already been accepted to Bard early action, so it’s nice to hear that it has a good art program! And I’ve already planned on applying to Williams, Skidmore, and Weselyan, so it’s good to know that I’m looking in the right places!
