Best Schools For Me

Hi,
I’d really like some advice as far as some really good schools to apply to for a Computer Science Major that I could apply to and have a solid chance of being accepted.
I live in the Northeast so I’d be looking for a school somewhere in the northeast, preferably within 500 miles of NYC.

I got a 1420 on SAT. GPA around 3.8. Only 1 AP class though.

I’d like to find a school that has good professors and academically challenging classes (who doesn’t lol) but also has a well rounded CS program and preferably some options like Software Engineering or Data Science or Cybersecurity or something like that which I could switch my major to if I wanted to study more specifically for one of these careers.

I’ve looked into Penn State (seems a little too research based), Northeastern (I doubt I would have much of a chance of being accepted), RPI (seems like I could have a decent chance of getting in but all its applications are binding so I’m a little nervous to commit). What schools have really good CS programs but someone with a solid but far from stellar SAT/GPA could realistically be accepted into in the northeast area?

Have you checked out WPI and RIT? Two great practically focused CS programs. UMass Amherst, Rutgers, and Stevens Institute of Technology would also be worth looking at as well.

Perhaps consider SUNY Stony Brook and Binghamton, whose student profiles are similar to that at RPI. Are you constrained by cost of attendance?

If you are in New York, then you should definitely check out the various SUNY’s. If you are in Massachusetts (or even if you are not), U.Mass Amherst is very good for computer science.

Apply regular decision to RPI.

Clarkson would also be worth a look as well as the other schools already mentioned.

Pitt. Great place. several computer science options.

Thanks for your replies everyone! Any reccomendations for schools South of NYC? Pennsylvania/Maryland/Virginia? I would prefer a school in one of these states but if there arent really any good ones that fit my academic position then obviously theres some great ones more North per your suggestions.

What year are you in high school?

High School Senior…Graduating Spring 2020. Planning to attend college Fall 2020.

Virginia Tech has Dec. 1 Early Action.

You’d be in running for scholarships at small private college in Maryland- Capitol Technology University.

Perhaps consider these three in Maryland, University of Maryland, College Park; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Towson University in Baltimore County. Looking at your stats, I think that UMCP might be a reach; UMBC a match and Towson a"safety" for you.
