Best Schools for Potential Major

I've wracked my brain trying to decide what I'd ultimately like to study in school and eventually pursue a career in. All signs are pointing to a career as an editor. More research is probably necessary to narrow that down, but a list of schools that would suit that career option would be helpful. I'm aware a degree in English is probably my best bet; any suggestions? Preferably in either California or NJ.

Such helpful people on this forum…

Such impatient posters!

You would get a better response if you provided some information for people to work with. And improve your attitude when you are asking complete strangers to spend their time helping you.

Have you done any research on your own about where you can study English in NJ or California? Do you have recommendations from a guidance counselor?
Where can you get in given your GPA, test scores, class rank etc.? How could we guess with no information provided? What can you afford to pay?
Have you tried a college search engine such as the one on this site?

Can you afford colleges OOS?

Now that’s the kind of response I was looking for! I apologize for the lack of information and poor attitude.

I’ve done some research, but feeling overwhelmed, I resorted to posting here. First, I am 22. Finished high school with a 3.77; that was in 2009. I have an AA in liberal arts from a local CC in NJ. I finished there with a 4.0. I am now living in California, taking a year off to attain residency. I am not ready to say with certainty that I will stay in CA. It is an option.

I’m confident that I can get into many schools; finding one is the issue. I don’t know which I should be applying too.

As far as paying for school goes, no matter where I go I will undoubtedly take out loans. Federal Aid will probably not be an option either.

Not sure any of that information helps you help me. I’d try using this college search engine if this website wasn’t so hard to navigate. Talk about overload. Could you send me in the right direction?

Thanks for responding :).

You mean the search engine on the CC main page: [College Admissions, Search, and Financial Aid Help from College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/) right at the center top of the page?

There are other search engines out there such as [College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics](College Navigator - National Center for Education Statistics)
You will find a ton of matches since every school has English as a major :frowning:
So you would need to narrow it down with some other criteria such as size, location etc.

I don’t know anything about how it works when you apply as a transfer student from a CC.
There is a CC forum here [Community Colleges - College Confidential](Community Colleges - College Confidential Forums)
And there is a transfer forum, I would read the 101 thread near the top:
[Transfer Students - College Confidential](Transfer Students - College Confidential Forums)

Can you get any advice from your community college? I though they were supposed to be very good at helping students?

I would actually suggest that you start a new thread entitled “Transfer to UC/CSU from NJ CC?”

California has requirements all its own for applying to UCs and CSUs. It tends to be a mystery to the rest of us. You need to attract the attention of people who know about it.

If you are going to be paying for this on your own, you need either instate prices OR a school, probably private, with great FA. Unfortunately, it is usually very difficult to get into the latter type of school as a transfer student, although the fact that you have achieved a 4.0 is very good and will help. Do you have SAT/ACT scores?

Are you by any chance female? Smith, just to name one, has a program that would be perfect for you if you are female: Ada Comstock Scholars. And there is no better place to get a degree emphasizing writing and editing than an elite LAC.

If by any chance you think you might be interested in an undergraduate journalism degree, there are other choices.

[Welcome to ASSIST](http://www.assist.org) is a useful site for students intending to transfer to California public universities. Although it won’t help you with course articulation for NJ community college courses, it will help you find which of them have majors you may be interested in and what lower division course requirements they have.

BTW, being in CA for a year does not make you a resident for UC purposes. You need to be independently living in CA for two years. http://www.ucop.edu/ogc/documents/student-information-sheet.pdf</a>
