I’m thinking of majoring in either psychology, political science or history. I’m open to hearing all opinions! Especially people who go to a SUNY school
I suggest that you look at the suny.edu website. It allows you to search by major, interests, sports availability, location and other variables. You can see what each school’s stats are for admitted students in the previous year to see where you fit in, how many students (UG and grad, it applicable) there are at each campus and other important information. You can link to any individual school from that site.
SUNY also offers (or did two years ago) a service where you can make an appointment after your junior year and meet with a counselor to discuss your options. You bring your unofficial transcript and test scores. I did it with my D09, S12 and S17. In both cases, the counselor suggested the SUNY where each wound up and, in each case, it was a school we were not familiar with. The counselor also suggested other schools and recommended applying to about 5 SUNY’s.
I found this service to be very helpful.
My son studied poli sci at Plattsburgh and liked it. There’s also a good poli sci program at Albany. Both programs have internships in Albany and D.C.
However, you need to first figure out what schools you are a viable candidate for and which offer programs you are interested in. Some schools have honors programs and some are more like honors programs (Bing, Stony Brook).
Check out the website and then come back with specific questions. There are 60+ schools.
I currently go to Stony Brook so if you have questions feel free to ask me. I’m busy atm so I might not be able to get back to you immediately.
It really depends on what you want out of a school. Binghamton is OK in the liberal arts and psychology. If you want a smaller school Geneseo is a pretty good option. Albany is a great choice for political science due to the location. Stony Brook is OK but it does have more of a stem focus, the commuter aspect is a problem for some people but long island residents may like the opportunity to live at home and save money.

I think SUNY Potsdam may have had some enrollment problems…just a hunch…they stopped requiring SATs. Years ago they were ranked about the same as Brockport and Fredonia. They may have fallen in the rankings.
How do you like Stonybrooke? What would you say are the pros and cons? I’m really considering It rn
