Best Time to Buy Books?

When is the best time to buy books for the fall quarter? After I register for the classes or right before school starts? I'm planning to buy my books online.

maybe you should calculate shipping times? you should have them no later than the first week of school.

Hmm, okay. Thanks.

Really though, if it’s a class that isn’t apart of a series, you might just wait until the class starts to see if you really even need the book.

Which classes don’t qualify as a part of series? Like those random GE’s and freshman seminars? If I’m pretty sure I’ll need books for those main classes like Chem 6AH, Math 20C right?

generally, if there’s no letter in the name, it’s a stand-alone class.

(of course, there are exceptions … chem 126/127 are paired, for example)

Ahh okay that clears things up a bit. Thanks!

^Yeah, for like a series, you might as well just get the book because you might definitely need it for later classes so it’s good to have for earlier classes, even if it’s not required. Otherwise, if it’s a single class where you really just won’t need it, or can check it out at the library for short periods of time, you might choose not to buy it.

Are there reference copies of books in the library that you can look at all day(while you’re in the library of course)?

yeah, for most classes. this is termed as being “on hold” or “on reserve” at the library (usually geisel). the professor has to request it, though. and they come in 2h chunks - if you’re the last person to borrow it for the night, you can take it home as long as you return it in the morning.

Wait, so for series classes, should I wait until I finish the entire series before I sell the textbooks back?

um … isn’t that common sense?

@astrina

Well you’re talking to an incompetent freshman n00b… XD

Oh… so it’s probably going to be the same book throughout the whole series? In that case, should I invest in getting a new book then?

^As opposed to buying a used one or do you mean buying it at all? I bought all my books used and they’re all perfectly fine.

@astrina

You get them for 3 hours at a time and you can keep checking it out if nobody else requested for it within that 3 hours.

ah, good to know. by the time i actually made it to the library, it’d already be finals week and the whole world would be there studying =/

@Kings:

Yeah I meant buying them new instead of old.
