Best transport to NYU dorms?

My son has a summer internship in NYC and will be lodging in the NYU dorms for the summer. He will be flying into JFK around 7 pm on a Monday night, and the job starts the next day. He'll have 2 rolling suitcases, and has never been to NYC. What is the best way for him to get to the dorms? Under other circumstances he'd most likely take the subway, but given that it's all new and he has 2 suitcases, I'm wondering if there is a Super Shuttle or some equivalent that is perhaps cheaper than a taxi.

He can take the train directly from JFK to Penn Station and then get a cab from there. But, honestly, I’d just have him take a cab. If he’s never been to NYC, it can be pretty overwhelming.

He can hire a car service. They’re way cheaper than cabs. Chinatown ones are known to be less expensive, and I usually use a Chinatown car service to get from JFK to my dorm. They have several cars waiting on standby at JFK, and you call them after you pick up your baggage and they’ll come meet you at your terminal in less than 15 minutes. They’ll take you anywhere in Manhattan or even NJ. The catch is that you can’t schedule it more than a day in advance because they get a lot of customers. My professor recommended Chinatown services to me and she says she’s been using Chinatown car services for 20 years and they haven’t failed her yet!

The one I use is Jin Ma Che (718) 762-8888 but there are several others to choose from too if you search on Google.

I wouldn’t recommend taking public transportation with two large suitcases if he’s never been to NYC before. Maybe he’s better at directions than me but I know personally that the first time I used the subway by myself was extremely confusing, even though I’d been on the subway before with my parents. Plus it would be hard to carry the suitcases up and down stairs; sometimes it’s really hard to find the elevators. NYC is also a bit overwhelming in and of itself if he’s never been there before and if he doesn’t know what the dorm looks like.

Surprised about the message about car services. We’ve used them before but they’ve always been at least $20 more expensive than a cab.

The multi-stop delays of SuperShuttle just aren’t worth the savings, IMHO.
