Best undergraduate business schools excluding ivies?

I’m only familiar with California schools. Here it’s Haas (UC Berkeley), Orfalea (CalPoly SLO), and then several privates like San Diego University. UC Santa Barbara has a heavily recruited Economics/Accounting major, hidden away behind its “party school” stereotype.

Berkeley-Haas, MIT-Sloan, NYU-Stern, Michigan-Ross, UVa-McIntire - top 5

edit - already posted

How does Penn State University Park’s business program compare? I know it isn’t top-tier, but how does it rank up against other big public schools?

It’s definitely decent. It was ranked as a top recruited school.

“Plus it’s in St Louis, middle of nowhere… Closest big city is 500 miles away.”

Travel much?

St. Louis is not in the middle of nowhere. The St. Louis metro area is one of the largest in the US. Distance from: Indianapolis=249 miles; Kansas City=253 miles; Louisville=261 miles; Memphis=284 miles; Milwaukee=383 miles; Nashville=316 miles; Chicago=360 miles

Actually, it seems kinda centrally located. For a prospective business major, St. Louis is home to a number of major corporations and relatively close to other cities that are home to major companies.

Penn State, only University Park. Or you could look into Berkeley

I won’t go near Penn State. They’re under a cloud with the Sandusky scandel. Besides, why go to a school that elevates FB players to the level of minor deities (unless you are a FB player).

With that mindset your pretty much limited to liberal arts schools, which have negligible fieldings of athletes they call football players.

One non-LAC that comes to mind is CMU which has one of the best undergrad business schools and is Division III. MIT Sloan school would be another.

In terms of Penn State, the first thing anyone will notice when they visit is the enormous football stadium that can be seen from miles away. It’s a reminder of their screwed-up priorities and of the abuse meted out to children there. With the Sandusky verdict, Penn State will be under a cloud of shame for decades with the over-sized stadium a reminder to all of what happened and how people turned a blind eye to protect their vaunted football program.

The certificate program is worth considering if you are pretty good at math and want to take challenging (graduate-level) business courses but at the same time still want a liberal arts or engineering education.

MIT football is a joke…?

In Texas, UT Austin (#1 accounting program) and SMU (which is private) have strong business programs as well as TCU (private Christian university with a solid business program as well).

Outside of Texas, I would have to say UMich Ann Arbor or Michigan St. (only if you want to major in supply chain management otherwise pass).

Under a cloud? Screwed up priorities? No. As a Penn Stater I can assure you that the entire community has completely moved on from the get go, and so has the administration, which is why everyone related to the scandal has been dismissed. Despite what happened last fall we are still the #1 school for corporate recruiting in the country. Despite the scandal, we moved from #25 to #22 for undergraduate business programs this year. In response to your statement about our love for football, sure we love football, but our football players graduate and get higher grades than the vast majority of football players who go to any other schools, you have paterno to thank for that and much more. Despite the scandal, applications and donors remain at the same strength pre scandal, and lastly, you might think football is the biggest thing at this school, but it isn’t, THON is. Last year we raised 10.8 million dollars in one year for children with pediatric cancer. As the largest student run philanthropy in the world, THON takes a much greater spot in the hearts of our students and shows what we really are capable of, no other school even comes close in spirit of that kind of magnitude. Go ahead and trash talk about a school you know nothing about all you want, just remember that although one terrible deranged person abused his power, we’re clearly above it, and are doing all we can to make sure we continue to rise. His actions don’t account for 99.9% of the school. My 2 cents.

Baruch College

I was between USC and WUSTL for business. I chose USC. Now I fully believe the business at WUSTL is better, a fact that makes me somewhat regret my decision. But the opportunities at USC are better than rankings can perceive because USC as well as UCLA and other SoCal colleges get to use LA as part of the classroom. No, SoCal colleges aren’t the best at business but to be close to a huge city is a factor I believe worth considering. So maybe you should look towards NYU, great business school and in NY. I personally looked away from NYU because it lacks the undergraduate experience I preferred but it is a great professional opportunity. And back to WUSTL, it’s national reputation can help when applying to grad school but I’m not positive it is as great of a choice if you don’t plan on grad school. Hope my opinion helped.

Daughter graduated from WUSTL business. Don’t have anything to compare it with but it seemed rigorous to her and she and everyone else who graduated with her (last year - terrible job market) got good jobs. She tried to take statistics II over the summer at several colleges elsewhere and when she sent the curriculums back to Wash U, the other schools’ stat II was covered in Wash U’s stat I. Also, employers seemed impressed with the Wash U name and some employers have been impressed with Wash U grads and have stepped up their recruiting there. And St. Louis has many major corporations.
