What are some good undergrad schools that will really help me get into Med School? Preferably in or near NC.

Check out the pre-med section of the forum for advice.

The school you like best and where you can do your best. Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill would generally be considered the best for premed in NC.

Just get a high score on MCAT. School won’t hold you back. Better if you can get into UNC- Chapel Hill.

It doesn’t matter where you do your undergrad, for the most part. As in multiple other forums, the main factors are your GPA and MCAT scores. Duke and UNC have the biggest names, but I know physicians who went to Davidson, Wake Forest, NC St, Elon, and UNC Charlotte.

When it comes to medical school, it is not where you go to college, but what you do when you are there. Obviously, you are better off going to a good university with ample research opportunities, but there are literally 100 colleges and universities that will serve you well in this regard.

schools don’t really “help” students get into med school…except for maybe those that write Commitee Letters, which can be a boost.

You should pick a good undergrad (and there are hundreds of good schools) that has good science classes (again, hundreds of schools have these).

You should pick a school where your stats are in the upper 25% so that you’re a top student in your classes. The premed prereqs aren’t easy anywhere, and most schools use those classes as “weeder” classes to weed out the weaker premeds and weaker STEM students. Schools usually limit the number of A’s awarded.

You want to work hard and be a top student so you can get those A’s. If your stats are average for the school, then your chances of getting A’s is lessened. You want a very high GPA for med school.

My son just started his second week of med school (hurray!). He went to a flagship public - a mid-tier rank - and had a 4.0 BCMP GPA and a 3.99 cum GPA (an A- in a Spanish class). He only completed 6 med school apps, but was accepted to 3 med schools…all of them US MD schools.) The fact that he didn’t go to an elite school made no difference.
