Best vocab studying methods?

I often find a lot of posts on the best vocabulary lists, but never have found a topic on the best ways to study/learn/retain the vocabulary. How do people manage to remember or to learn hundreds or thousands of vocabulary words efficiently? I know the common method is flash cards, but If you guys could share your own effective tips, advice, methods, and successes on learning sat vocabulary or just vocab in general, I would greatly appreciate it.

I used the Princeton Review apps. I never had the organization or time to make and use flash cards. (SAT W-760)

I recommend finding a good “class” on Quizlet. TONS of good SAT vocab classes on there. LEARN mode is the key to long-term retention.

What do you mean by class? I know that Quizlet allows people to make sets of virtual notecards but I have never heard of quizlet classes… Also is it counterproductive to cram tons of words in a short period of time? Like will I learn less if I try to cram more?

Cram the relatively easy words so that you’re at least familiar with them if they come up, and memorize the really hard ones

Direct Hits Volumes 1 and 2 are often recommended on CC by people who have gotten 2200+. Also, reading the New York Times is a great way to improve vocabulary.

To answer the original question of the OP…

Explain the meaning of the given word to an imaginary classroom… out loud. Define it, use it in a sentence, describe alternate meanings, etc. all out loud.

Once you can do that without peaking at you notes, or the flashcard, or Direct Hits, etc, remove that word from your to do list and move on.

Vocab work takes deliberate practice. Absorption rates are limited only by time and the amount of effort you are willing to put in.

Good luck

Quizlet reorganized sets into “classes” a year or so ago. Each “class” has a buncha sets in it. Here’s a decent one for SAT, for example:

[SAT Vocab | Quizlet](http://quizlet.com/class/659009/)

(this one’s alphabetical, it looks like, which I don’t prefer, fwiw)

Well i have a flash card app on my phone and so making flash cards is really convenient. I try to pick meanings from part of a word and think of the word that way. For example abridge means to shorten so i think of a bridge blowing up:rolleyes:

That’s a great strategy. Mnemonics ftw.

What do you guys feel about online flashcards? Are they as helpful as physical cards?

Also can anyone recommend some flashcards apps? Especially ones I can make my own cards.

Why dont u go to quizlet.com? They allow u to make ur own flashcards and the learn mode as well as the other modes is really helpful. From my view, online flashcards are much more convenient since they save u time and paper as well :D

If u have android, then i recommend flashcard buddy
