Hey I do pretty poorly on cr passages so I was thinking of changing my method of doing it. I've heard a few options to approach them by
1) Read passage carefully then move on to the questions
2) Don't read passage...just move onto the questions (line reference questions first and main idea questions last)
3) Read first/last paragraphs carefully and skim topic sentence of each body paragraph

Which of these methods (if you have your own please let me know) is most helpful for you guys? Both time and accuracy is my problem when im doing cr passages T.T

number 2 works sometimes...... and u ll miss some definitely... number 3 you ll find to be just as time consuming as number 1 cuz u ll be going back and forth for the main idea ones... cuz i think the small details help you figure the main idea.. not just the topic sentences .. also for stuff like "what does paragraph 3 emphasize?" .. so ya.. better off with number 1, although with a little variation, mark the spots for line references and when u get to them, answer them.

for long passages, i use number 3 and it works pretty well...i mean each person is different, but i think that works well b/c u get the main pts of the essay in the first paragraph...n for the detail questions, they give line # for u to go back to...i started w/ number 1, but then that took up wayy too much time, sometimes i would even run out of time, but ever since i've started number 3, i have enough time to answer all the questions n some more to go back n check some...n i don't get many wrong either

for short passages i recommend reading the questions first and then going to the passage

hkshah: yeah i normally use the first method and ive done so for 5+ practice tests but i dont see myself improving and im constantly fighting against time and some of the times i dont even finish (though when i rush i tend to get more wrong). my cr score is terrible (mid 500s) so for now im just aiming for mid 600s

Grammatix works very well but it will not get you an 800; That's not to say that I don't use it's strategies when I get stuck (the patterns of wrong answers is the best part).

ya voodoo_santa if ur having the same problem that i use to have, try number 3 it really helped me...just be sure to carefully rd the first paragraph and ALL of the topic sentences...lemme kno whether or not it works! :)
and for a ballpark estimate, my score went from a low 600 to low 700 after i started using this technique...i mean it didn't jump right away, but after using it consistently it did
good luck :)

I would recommend #3 for certain passages (long science passages). The rest, i would use #1. It takes practice to get accustom to #3, but it allows you to have additional time to re read the short passages and check your answers.
