Best way to decline a college offer

My oldest is finally a senior and this college stuff is confusing. When accepted to multiple colleges how do you decline the colleges you do not want? Is it best to send an email, call, or send a letter? It seems rude to just not respond when some students have been wait-listed. What is the best way?

You receive a postcard with your acceptance package that you mail back with your decision. Many colleges let you do this online, as well.

Use the postcard.

He never received a post card from any of the schools so far. One was a letter saying he had been accepted and two were online letters.

the “fat” envelope containing info on how to either enroll or decline often lags behind the actual acceptances, especially the ones learned about online, so it will probably show up within a week or so. if it hasn’t after two weeks, you should call the college admissions office.

Write a letter thanking them and respectfully declining. Don’t be rude because you may need them in the future.

Fax a copy to the admissions office and mail the hard copy (under the students signature).

^ That is utterly unnecessary. To decline an offer of admission, you check “decline” on the postcard they give you with your acceptance package and then send it back to them. Doing anything else is a waste of time, effort, and paper.

^No card. So what now? ESP?

How did they expect you to accept the offer?
