I know regional rail is more expensive but we live out in country and kid is very unfamiliar with public transportation. Until he gets his philly bearings straight, would he be wiser to use regional rail to get to 30th street station. Once he starts hanging out with other kids and taking subway around, subway should be ok. Or is regional rail still way to go even after he gets bearings straight. And I think u can get subway tokens at Cecil b Moore. Can u buy from person or do u have to use machine. Where do u buy regional rail tickets at?

There should be others much more familiar with this, but I will take a shot.

It is about a 15 minute ride on the regional rail from Temple to 30th Street Station. Very easy trip.

The only problem is that it is expensive - $4.75 each way for a relatively short ride. At least in my mind that is expensive.

There is a ticket booth right there at Temple that is open Monday to Friday until 7:00 PM. After that or on the weekend , you can buy the ticket on the train.

There are apps available for smart phones for transportation options in most big cities, including Philly. They use GPS to identify your current location, and give you very detailed information as to what options to use to get to your destination. They specify bus or train, route numbers, where to catch the various options, and even how to get from, say a bus stop to catch a connection on the next train. We don’t live in an area with much public transportation, but our D has used her app in NYC, Philly, Boston, Chicago etc. I’m amazed at how detailed it is. There are various apps available, but they all do basically the same thing. It should really help him out- according to our D, it is hard to get lost in a big city anymore!

Google Maps in its desktop and mobile versions, is a free app that handles public transportation routing very well. Here is 30th St to Temple U: <a href=“Google Maps”>http://■■■■■■/maps/mIOfv

Hey guys. Thanks. I forgot he could use smart phone phone to get around. He should be fine then. I had panicked mom visions of him in downtown Philly clueless with a bacpavk

The subway is actually easier than regional rail. It is clean & well-lit & the Cecil B. Moore station will be filled with Temple students. It’s somewhere around $1.50 per ride & he can buy tokens at the machine right in the station. Take the Broad Street Line south to City Hall & transfer to the Market-Frankford line going west & it will take him to 30th street.
