@basketweaver well. I think you win. You are insane. You are just. how? how’d you do it? Everybody who wants to know the acceptance/reject list…look at what basketweaver’s post. He is 100% accurate. Well done sir. Well done. BTW, he went to Berkeley since his parents wanted him to. I know…sucks.
I’ll be keeping an eye out on you whenever I decide to do a Chance Me. Most reliable chance-er right here. (though you arrived at your conclusion through analysis and not really through the stats). But none the less. Next time I do a chance me…I know who to expect a decent reply from.
Thanks to you I won the bet (5 dollars woot)
Props to Skyrior for getting close.

Anyways…this comes to show that colleges have really random application processes. So if my friend can get into NW and Columbia with a decent GPA and ACT…so can you. There’s still hope! Also shows that CC chance mes’ are fairly inaccurate when it comes to top school predictions…with some special exceptions.
Doesn’t mean I won’t be doing anymore Chance mes. xD Just for nerve calmers.

So an ACT of 35 is very strong, equivalent to about a 2330 SAT. But 6 AP classes and < 3.8 UW GPA is pretty low. I never would have guessed Columbia or NU. I also thought Berkeley would have been “no” because that GPA weighted doesn’t seem like a top 10% of class, and I thought that was pretyt much required in-state. I would say your friend got lucky or there is something subtle missing. Or maybe the competitiveness of the schools comes into play more than I thought. Where did he go and what did he study?

I agree the GPA is solid at a competitive school, but 6 APs seems low for that acceptance list. My son took 11 APs with > 3.8 GPA UW, and I’ll be pleased if he gets into half those non-UC schools …

@Daddio3 There’s a point where the amount of APs you take does not matter anymore. 6 or 11…just as long as colleges see you’re challenging yourself. My sister took 2 APs in her Junior year and 3 in her Senior year. She still got into Stanford.

Yay. Now I know my gut is good at chancing. Anyways, like tguan916 said, I used normal chancing methods/the friends’ stats and reasoning/psychology to come to my guess, so I’m really not psychic or a good chancer.

Chances are good for getting a rough idea of where you stand. Or for fun, if you’ve been a long time member of CC and a commenter/lurker on the chances forum. But they’re quite often inaccurate, as out of the 12-ish replies on this thread only one was correct.

Apologies to people who asked me for chances. In mid-January I decided I would not chance people any more, or at least not for a while. Trying to play admissions committee is kind of scary and a bit overwhelming (what if my suggestions actually dissuaded someone from applying, someone who the admissions committee might have seen something in that I missed? or what if I instill false hope in an candidate, and they end up like andison?) because people actually take their chancers very seriously. Also whenever I see egotistical people, students who are sophomores or younger, or trolls ask for chances/reply on these forums, I get annoyed. I might start chancing people again someday, but for now…no, sorry.
