Better to get a B in a hard class or just drop it?

I have always been a 4.0 student, but the first quarter it takes me a while to get back into the groove of school. I usually end up with a B+ in Math or Science and bring it up to a high A by the end of the year. However senior year is different as some colleges want my first quarter grades. I am taking Honor Statistics, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, AP Biology, AP Literature and Composition, and AP Government and Politics. I am probably going to end the first quarter with a B+ in Calculus and maybe Physics. Will a school not accept me as a pre-med major for having a B in these classes despite having a lot of EC’s, internship in the U.K., state leadership position, 33 on ACT, and a past record of 4.0 GPA? My physics teacher suggested dropping the class but I know I can bring it up by the end of the year. Should I cut my losses and drop these classes or just submit my grades as they are and hope for the best? Please help I am really stressed. My top choice school is Brown and I just don’t want this to not let me get accepted there.

One B will not hurt your chances.

Your perspective belies a huge gulf with what colleges are looking for. Do you really believe that only 4.0 students go onto “good” schools and are pre-meds? Don’t be so wound up. You have some great achievements. You’ll be fine.

The earth won’t split the day you get a C in a class.

Better to earn an A in the hard class.

What colleges ask for your first quarter grades? I know a lot who ask for mid year reports but shouldn’t you be able to average out an A in time for your mid year reports?

IT’S JUST A B

At the very least I’d drop the honors statistics and reduce your course load.
Have you already taken any AP Physics classes? If so then drop the C.
2AP science classes in the same year is too much for most students.

Although there may be a few other schools besides Penn State, premed is not a major. If you dont get into Brown there are many, many schools where you can still pursue your dream (aka medicine)

Will this be your life’s philosophy to drop something the minute it doesn’t turn out exactly as you desire?

Any grade of B and above will be perfectly, absolutely fine.
Taking 2 science AP’s sounds like torture considering the time for labs.
Do you even have time to sleep (enough)?
If the answer’s no, drop Honors Stats and take a fun class that won’t require homework. I promise you it won’t break your application, in fact it’ll make you stand out a little among the kids who use the “everything but the kitchen sink” approach to APs, and it’ll show you know how to balance a schedule.

Thank your for your replies. I just wanted to give you an update. I ended the quarter with A in all of my classes except Physics. I have taken honors physics previously but this is my first AP Physics. Honor Stats is honestly my easiest class. I don’t have much homework or have to study much for tests. My AP Physics teacher was not pleased with me staying in the class, so he is really hammering me. I don’t mean to blame him, but I feel with a different teacher I could do so much better. My guidance counselor has told me my only option is to stay in the class. Any advice? Thank you

Since your only option is to stay in the class… stay in the class :frowning:
ask your guidance counselor whether you could switch out and take another class second semester?

^^ NOT a good idea. [ switching out of the class]
AP Physics is a full year course.
Just do you ABSOLUTE BEST THIS NEXT QTR!!

One B in AP Physics isn’t going to keep you out of anything. And why is this physics teacher being so awkward? Is no one in the class allowed to get a B?

When you say you are applying as a pre-med, do you mean you are applying to the PLME program?

Thank you everyone for the responses. Yes, I am applying for the PLME program.
