I've visited offgrounds.com and have found it to be rather useless...craigslist has only turned up summer sublets...so, my question: if I come to C'ville later on this week, where should I begin my search in person? Literally, where should I park and where should I walk to meet with owners and landlords?

Any good websites I might check out other than the ones I've mentioned?

Thanks.

Most of the good housing will have already been taken. People generally sign leases up to a year in advance.

silence, honestly there is nothing much left. The only things that will be available will likely be the most expensive that haven't been leased due to their cost. For your first year as a transfer you might consider living on-grounds. If not you can check out msc-rents.com wadeapts.com velikyrentals.com cbsrentals.com

All right...good to know, even though the outlook is a bit grim. Thanks.

At worst, you can get a place in Hereford.

silence, i recommend you go to the school and go into newcomb hall and the libraries. There are tons of posts for people who need another roommate and such. You might be able to get into one of those for next year. Also, if you do live on grounds try for lambeth or maybe the irc or a language house. hereford is miserable.

Agreed. If you look around at enough message boards, you'll probably find a lot of people with open rooms in apartments. I'd recommend going to Newcomb and all the libraries to start, but I'd also go to individual departments. I see a lot of ads in specific buildings. Oh, and as a somewhat older nontraditional student, you could probably live with graduate students or something.

What if I lived outside the mile or two-mile radius and drove toward Grounds? Would I find more options? I'm not talking about living in Richmond, but if I could find decent housing a few miles away from Grounds I'd be all for it.

you'll find options - cheap options - but honestly, why would you destroy your social life that way?

Its really a nuisance to have to drive anywhere - especially since parking in cville is miserable. You'd have to pay to park in the garage probably, and at $10 a day, you could just get a nicer apartment for $200 more a month.

I'm having to look for off-grounds housing as well and it's a huge pain in the butt. I'll be married by then so living in the dorms is not even a consideration, and we have two dogs and two parrots so neither are apartments, condos or townhomes, really. Trying to find an available home for less than $1,000 within close proximity to the college that allows dogs and undergrads and has a lease period beginning June-August is a NIGHTMARE. If you're a single guy with no pets...I envy you.

Oh and try these:

http://www.caar.com
http://www.c-ville.com/

http://www.dailyprogress.com/

Be aware that housing does offer on-grounds housing for families.

"and we have two dogs and two parrots"

Even if I were single it wouldn't be an option.
