I was fairly set upon going to UMich...until today when I got my acceptance from William and Mary. I didn't entirely expect to get in, waitlisted seemed to be the way things were going to go for me, but now that I am in, I'm not really sure what to do. Michigan is still probably my top choice, due to the fact that it's far away, yet still relatively close (I'm in Chicago suburbs, along with a good portion of people on this forum). My intended major is Poli Sci, if that helps. Anyone help me in considering the factors in front of me?

William and Mary is a good school. But it is hard to compare W&M to Michigan since they are completely different. William and Mary is located in a sleepy little college town whereas Ann Arbor is a lively college town. Michigan itself is a large research public university. William and Mary is a small LAC-type public university. Reputationally and academically, Michigan is stronger, but W&M holds its own.

In Political Science, Michigan is second to none, so if you are serious about PS, it shouldn't even be a a question. The breadth and depth of academic offerings at Michigan is unmatched...particularly in Political Science.

However, overall, W&M is a great school, so if you prefer a smaller community in a more serene and quiet locale, it may be the answer. On the other hand, if you are indifferent or if you prefer a more spirited and diverse environment, go to Michigan. In terms of education, both have muich to offer, but Michigan has the stronger departments and the bigger name.

Thanks for your help. It is really hard to compare the two, since they are entirely different and form a different college experience. I think that part of the problem is, I'm not entirely sure what I want, yet, I feel that Michigan is the right place for me. Most likely, I'll go that way.
