BFA Acting Pre-Screen and Auditions. Class of 2022 - Sharing!

@calartsdreamer decisions came out around the first week of March.

Heard from Pace BA. But not Pace BFA. Also. NewSchool said that they would not know till end of month.

Anyone hear from American yet? Someone said they sent mail out the beginning of this week. Did anyone get anything? Thanks!! It is almost over

CCPA at Roosevelt or UArts? Which one has a better acting program??? Which school prepares students to act in front of cameras more? Because I would like to be a film actor in the future. I am deciding between Uarts and CCPA and would like informed opinions if possible. Any help is appreciated.Thank you

I love that we are all in this new stage of making choices – congrats to all our kids!
My D is still waiting for Pace FTVC and Tisch, but (realistically) she’ll be choosing between Syracuse BFA and Muhlenberg BA. Any thoughts on the pros/cons of these two programs would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone else apply to university of Miami? My S’s portal was updated yesterday to say he was accepted to their college of arts and sciences (which is where their Theatre program is), but no mention of the BFA-Acting. No email yet and no information on merit aid.

@bfa2018 you have a much tougher decision than the MT mom on the other boards. Muhlenberg and Syracuse are completely different schools in every way! It’s really such a hard decision. Not just which BFA to choose, but my D found the BA route appealing all along so we had that to contend with as well. Good luck to you!

@marg928 Thank you – but it’s a nice problem to have! :slight_smile:

As we enter into the final acceptances phase, and move into the making a decision phase, one thing stands out to me. Those kids that give the tour really have a strong influence on the student’s view of the school. One of schools my son was accepted into, along with a fantastic FA package, seems to be low on the list, and dude will not even attend the admitted students day. When I reflect on the day there, I remember the kid giving the tour mentioning her family legacy multiple times, it was clearly a source of pride. It felt, after a few times, that it had edged into bragging. I’d quote the degree of obnoxiousness, but it would identify the student. And so now, here we are
while getting the tour from students gives a flavor of the school, I really wish they’d pair up students with different majors/personalities. Anyone else have a tour experience that is really impacting the final decision?

Yes
my daughter is so upset. She was waitlisted after receiving a card and told to seriously consider their program over others.

Acting majors at CCPA get three semesters of on camera training from a Chicago-based casting director (at least my son’s year they did). There are also a lot of opportunities for student film gigs with film programs at Columbia, DePaul, Loyola, Northwestern and the Harold Ramis School at Second city. My kid was in six student films and one web series while in college, nothing paid or very high end, but lots of time in front of the camera. I’m going to page @myloves for the Uarts side of things, because I really don’t know how the two programs compare. (I would guess that they’re roughly comparable in quality and selectivity.)

He also did one extra session (on Sense8) and got a stand-in gig one time for one of the Chicago xxx shows, if you pointed a gun to my head, I’d say Chicago Med, but I can’t remember.

@DoinResearch - I totally agree. We had a very negative tour experience at Emerson - (highlight: I had a broken foot in a boot, and the guide chided me several times for slowing the pace of the tour) which took it off my D’s list even though the school itself ticked every box on our collective “what we want” lists

@DoinResearch We had a terrible tour at Chicago Columbia, which eliminated it as a safety choice for us.

@DoinResearch We visited a school where we loved the faculty – D said the sample acting class was the best acting class she’d ever been in – great program and opportunities, but the students leading tours and panels didn’t seem to actually like each other. D couldn’t see herself being around the group for hours and hours each day, given the weird vibe she was getting from them.

@Twoboysandadog same here with our tour of Columbia, it was a shambles. Kid liked it, he didn’t seem to have issue with the issues I had. Then the strike
and I just think its too much money for teachers that are at odds with the administration. The was an unsettling vibe in the air. @toowonderful didn’t you break the foot to slow down the tour? "cause that’s what I heard
 :))

@DoinResearch “Shambles” is the perfect word for it. We ditched halfway through.

So can you all enlighten me on the issues with Columbia College. My daughter has been looking into the school with some positive feedback from her theater teachers on the program there. I haven’t heard of these issues at the school.

You guessed it @DoinResearch - I’m quite the sneaky one >:)

The opposite can be true as well- a really great tour can put a school that otherwise might get cut in the running. Denison was one of my D’s safeties - and hands down the best tour experience we had anywhere. A special parking spot with a name placard, Welcome from the Dean of Admissions, a personalized tour where D got to go backstage in their facilities and the opportunity to say hello to several faculty, vouchers for the coffee shop in town - all this just as an “ordinary” tour - she hadn’t even applied at that point, we were just exploring different types of schools.

@Twoboysandadog The ending was the worst part of it. We were “dumped” unto a teacher working with a student in a common area, teacher was unable to answer basic questions about the program overall, because she was an expert in her whatever she taught. Head of admission or theater (can’t remember) had coat on and was leaving, walked by the group, answered a few questions teacher was unable to answer. Then left. This was the best part - when it ended, teacher left deeper into the interior of the building, and the tour group was left to find their own way out of the building, which was not easy, there were all turns and stairways, 'cause elevator was broken. Not even the decency to show the group to the front door. I wished I had dropped breadcrumbs. Now, that said, I have been to theater in Chicago with Columbia graduates, and they have a good reputation. The vibe wasn’t good (for us).
