BFA Acting Pre-Screen and Auditions. Class of 2022 - Sharing!

@CTMomofAJC Unfortunately, the scholarship would have been in the FA package.

@Atreuh If my S plans to audition at ITF for DePaul, do you know if that would suffice for his pre-screen? Also, if anyone has experience auditioning at ITF, if you don’t get a call back there, can you re audition during the normal application process?

We were told he would be getting scholarships and even amounts…

@CTMomofAJC I think it’s possible that departmental scholarships might not be listed on the FA package you received. Last year my D got awarded a departmental scholarship later after the FA package came from the college.

@collegeadmiss DePaul may change the way that they want the prescreen done. When you apply, They give you specific directions for the pre-screen. This year it was an up close monologue (waist up) and one full-length monologue shot in a neutral space. This upcoming year it may be something else. In 2016, I believe it was done differently. These Pre-Screens are a bit new to their program. Once you pay, they will send you instructions. When my S did a pre-screen for them, he was told that he had to do the same monologue as his pre-screen (from 4 months prior) again during the live audition. He had forgotten it and had to relearn it a few days before.

I guess trying to figure out how to Pre Screen will more or less be whatever they see fit for the year that you’re applying. You are probably better just trying to figure out what monologues you will be doing for all of your audition with most of them being contrasting and some being only 1 minute ( maybe find some monologues that you can trim for 1 minute so that you’re not having to memorize so many) Hope I’ve shed some light

@collegeadmiss - DePaul does send some people to the Illinois HS Theatre Fest. But I would not consider that to be an actual audition for DePaul or any school that you REALLY want to impress. It’s more like an introduction. The audition at Theatre Fest is like this: each kid has their 2 (or 3) minute time slot to give their 2 monologues to an auditorium full of auditors (from the participating colleges). Within about 30 minutes, each kid gets a form email with a list of interested colleges. It says something like – be sure to stop at our booth later today. The interested colleges tell kids to make sure they apply, etc. As I understand - it’s a pretty casual atmosphere. My S had already applied and sent his prescreen videos to DePaul, and he had been invited to audition live. But that means either on campus or at unifieds (NY or LA). Similarly - he had applied to Western Michigan U (they did not use prescreens). They saw him at Theatre Fest and sent him a note of interest. But he still did a live audition at Chicago Unified. Think of Theatre Fest as a good place to scope out various schools and take it from there.
If your S or D is interested in the schools that require pre-screens - get it done in early Fall. Also - apply early to a few safety schools. Getting a YES on the board will be a confidence boost moving forward. BAL!

@actingdreams yes, thank you for saying so. I agree. I’ve had a feeling for a long time that she could have just stopped after Christmas and focused on what she had (and honestly knew up front were her best fit schools) rather than extending this out to get more feedback from the top tier/prestige schools. But, its her journey and perhaps the rejections are something that she needs to experience.

My D finally opened her Michigan email last night. Another friend also got a no and asked her if she had checked her email. My worry was seemingly for “naught” because when I asked her how she felt about it she said “stupendous” with a dry humor tone. Got to keep reminding myself not to project my fragile emotions about this onto her. These kids have been toughened over the years from auditioning so much and being rejected when they really put themselves out there.

Has anyone else heard from Chapman? My son applied early action and auditioned 1/21 at NY Unifieds. It’s one of his top choices along with Cal Arts. Just curious. Thx

@Mcgeok I know several kids who heard last night – either receiving an email or checking the portal. Have your son check the portal and see if the results are there bc he might not get an email.

Thanks so much! I’ll have him check.

Nothing on the Chapman portal yet. This is so stressful!

@Mcgeok They did say the decisions would be rolling so just keep checking. I hope he gets in!

Thanks so much! Me too!

@Mcgeok my D applied to Chapman last year, EA and auditioned at NY Unifieds. We waited so long for an answer. There were definitely some kids who were accepted right after Unifieds but we heard nothing until maybe sometime in March. I kept checking in with them and I was also told admissions were rolling but it made no sense that others had been notified weeks earlier when my D’s application was in in November. Finally we got a letter and it was WAITLIST. Weird thing is that it was a generic WL letter, no mention of the theater department at all. It seemed to be an academic WL. I found the whole thing very strange. She never did get off the WL.

My S just found out (via acceptd) that he was wait listed at Penn State for BFA-Acting. I know that’s better than a rejection, but darn.

Anyone happen to know whether NYU sends out these inquiry emails across the board? Gist: “We’re finalizing decisions soon and want to know whether you’ve already committed to another school.” (Asking for a friend.)

@katew529 My son got the email. Sounds like they just want to make sure you are not committed to another school already before they consider your app seriously.

We just got the NYU email as well.I was going to asl about it too

That is stressful! I hope it doesn’t take that long. The waiting is the worst part.
