I'm a theater major/MT minor at my high school right now...I love MT but I just want to go to school to get a BFA Acting degree, not MT. However, I don't want to quit voice and dance lessons...what schools allow you to get your BFA in acting, but also offer singing/dancing as either a small part of the curriculum or private lessons?

Elon offers dance, though difficult to get in due to needing preregistration for the upper levels. Even then there seems to be difficulty getting into the class online, even with the pre-reg permission, which is how the kids register. Some frustration for my d there as she seems to miss getting into some of the upper level class that fill quickly by dance BFA as well as MT dancers, and if you aren't able to register online the first chance due to technical difficulties with pre-reg issues, the class is usually full. Elon really does seem to have wonderful dancers, and they all need upper level classes!
The voice lessons have been a dissappointment due to non majors only being allowed a 1/2 hour lesson per week. These private lessons are not included with tuition, but can go toward elective classes with the BFA acting degree. Only MT majors, not sure about VP majors though I assume they would too, get the hour lesson. If someone was serious about singing, they may need to find an outside vocal teacher/coach as the college teachers don't seem to have much time in their schedules for non-majors.

Here's the MT minor curriculum at UArts for Acting majors (it is different for dance and voice majors who can also minor in MT):

Take three Dance classes - DAPF 111X, 112X, 311X, 231X, 121X, 101X, 201X, 425, 1 cr each x 3 = 3 cr, 1.5 hrs/wk each x 3

Elective - Select one of the following:
Two Music ensembles - MUPF 8XX, 1 cr each x 2 = 2 cr, 1 - 1.5 hrs/wk each
THEA 353 Musical Theater History I Credits: 3 cr, 3 hrs/wk
THEA 354 Musical Theater History II Credits: 3 cr, 3 hrs/wk

In addition to the above, Acting majors audition for all the same shows as MT majors (and vice versa) so there are plenty of opportunities to perform in musicals if one so desires.

Thank you so much everybody. :) I'll definitely look into all the schools you mentioned.

One school that I've already been looking at is UArts (and I'm extremely interested.) However, I feel stupid...what's MUPF 8XX? I know it says "Music Ensemble", but what exactly is that?

MU = Music Department, PF = performance based class (I think ;) ) and 8XX means an 800 series class and you get to pick any that are not limited exclusively to music majors. If you go to the course catalogue online, the options are spelled out in more detail.

Many BFA Acting majors at OCU take dance and voice every semester, though as dancinfeet said, only 3 and 3 are required. You can also take other classes in the music school (for example, 2 other BFA-ers and I are in Music Theatre Workshop right now).

I highly recommend the BFA program - it is very triple-threat oriented.

At Syracuse, I think acting majors are allowed to take MT dance classes IF THERE IS ROOM IN THE CLASS. And unfortunately there is rarely room in the lower level classes. An audition would probably be required for participation in more advanced levels. I'm pretty sure private voice lessons would be available through the music department. Of course, you will get the most accurate info if you contact the drama department directly.

Both MT and Acting majors take their acting classes together, and acting majors are frequently cast in the musical productions. The fellow who played Sweeney Todd in last spring's production was an acting major.

I am a sophomore BFA Acting major at Webster University, and I take private voice and dance classes for credit. You can take all dance classes at all levels, as long as you can fit them into your schedule. I highly recommend Webster if you're wanting to be an Acting major who dances and sings. You should check it out!
