BFA Acting - Roosevelt CCPA vs. UArts vs. Marymount Manhattan

Just looking for opinions on these schools… welcome any input, especially those that feel they can compare 2 or 3 of these schools.

Did you have a chance to visit any of the schools/tour? I think a lot of it at least for my S was a feeling and he really wanted a BFA conservatory style training. We liked UArts as you have an opportunity to take classes thru another college and minor in another subject for free( up to so many classes a semester) Facilities were nice, students seemed nice ect but it just wasn’t a fit for him. We visited Marymount and he hated it so didn’t audition but again it was a particular vibe he got. Also the dorms are many blocks away from campus so that is something to think about as well.

You can message me if you have any other questions.

Good luck

Within the major, UArts and CCPA felt kind of similar: both conservatories, both with acting/MT intermingled, both with an active professional faculty. Both also obviously have city campuses in active arts cities. Sizes of the studios and classes are similar. I forget the specifics of things such as dance faculty and flexibility of curriculum at CCPA. (At UArts, the dance program is considered one of the very best, and the UArts curriculum offers great flexibility and individuality.) One way that they differ is in the focus of the schools themselves. At UArts, arts are incorporated in some way in all courses (except science and math if one chooses to take classes at the College of Sciences). At CCPA, it’s obviously a conservatory within a college–one that felt separate to us from the rest of the college. That changes the tone and overall environment; at UArts, the vast majority of students are focused and motivated to improve themselves artistically as well as intellectually, are supportive of others’ journeys in this no matter what major they are in, and, as lofty as this might sound, are concerned with using art as well as intellect to improve/help/contribute to communities and the world.

I’m not as familiar with MM because my D did not apply there.

All 3 have solid reputations.

At this point, I think it comes down to personal fit/personal vibe and maybe finances. Good luck with the decision!

(But note that math is not required at UArts… I realized it read that way after the editing option was gone.)

I don’t know much about the other two schools but I will second the idea that CCPA is a true conservatory, almost completely separate from RU.

Also this year, and maybe last, I feel that they have been aligning their season with the school’s focus on social justice. The plays and even the musicals they choose are very politically engaged and deal with serious issues, which become part of the dramaturgy. That may appeal to you or not.

Thanks everyone–this input aligns with what we have been finding. I think we are about to make it official.
