BGO Report

I was extended an appointment to the Naval Academy in January, and recently my BGO called me to ask me whether or not I have sent my acceptance letter back. I said no, I had not, because I still wanted time to think things over and be 100% committed to my choice. However, he said it would behoove me to make a decision within the next week, as he would be submitting a report (presumably about me, i'm not sure) and that it would look bad if I hadn't made a decision soon.

My question is what is this report about? I have already received an appointment, but if I don't make a decision soon can they take it away? What effect would this report have?

I am fairly certain he is not just making something up to pressure me to join because that is not his job. However, I do not know if I can reach a decision in one week, and would prefer more time to come to the decision that I can stand by 100%

Have you had your interview with your BGO as of yet?
The reference could be related to that if the interview has not been completed.

Other than that, BGOs can enter in notations on the candidates file, usually entered throughout the admissions process for items they feel are note worthy for the admissions board.

At this time you have until May 1st to return your acceptance [get it in well before that- mid April the latest].

What I would suggest is this, however.
Figure out what is holding you back from your decision, and seek information to either validate or discount it.
Consider making another visit to the Academy, although I realize that is a hike from your location. But if the opportunity presents itself, grab it.
Be frank with your BGO. If you have reservations, bring them to the forefront to discuss them. It is not unusual to get cold feet [it happens to a lot of kids at some point]- but your BGO should be able to answer any questions you may have in hopes of addressing your concerns. And don’t be hesitant to let your BGO know you need time to make your decision. It could be as simple as your BGO wanting to close out your file, and part of his due dilligence is following up on those candidates who have received an appointment and making sure the acceptance- or decline, is sent in before the deadline.
In addition to speaking to your BGO, ask him if he can arrange for you to speak to a Midshipman from your area. In speaking to Mids, ask them plenty of questions, especially about the things that have you concerned- don’t hold back. Mids are very honest when they speak about the academy, and they aren’t shy about giving you the real gouge.

After doing all of the above, think about where you see yourself 5 years from now. What are your goals? What do you see yourself doing? Then figure out which of he opportunities before you will best get you there.

If you already have an appointment, you have until May 1st to decide.

The BGO is out of line trying to pressure you to accept it early.

Use all the time you need to decide.
