BHP APPLICANTS

What were your stats and were you accepted or denied? What do you think bhp values the most in its applicants? I had a high class rank, near perfect score, extracurriculars, and still couldn’t get in.

Wait listed with stats right at the bhp average. I think essay made the difference. That, and son approached all the application information with a sense of fun.

I will let you know a key ingredient that will help in getting into BHP. In your extracurricular activities have you done something significant that pertains specifically to business ? That counts for a lot!

I met or exceeded all of their numbers, had multiple professional internships in NYC and still was rejected. I was also president of FBLA and placed in numerous Long Island competitions (although, they’re regional, so I understand they’re not a big deal). Might be subjective, but based on my own resume I can’t say I agree with @TinTintoo about extracurriculars in business helping out. I’d like to know what people who were accepted had that really stood out.

Were you out of state? I think the bar will be higher for you.

I think it is a holistic process involving grades, essays, and ECs. My child’s ECs were good but not terribly business related. Played a sport at a high level, did lots of service, school leadership. He had some travel and language skills, very high math skills. Did the math and international angles help? Maybe. Honestly we were surprised he got an interview. Not that he wasn’t worthy, he had a strong record, but didn’t know he would catch their attention. That’s why I think the essay made such a difference; he had a great, off beat essay.

But he isn’t going to be in bhp, so take what I say with a grain of salt. You need something beyond what I listed. I wonder if an earlier application would have helped?

@Lizardly I disagree about the bar being higher for OOS. Several OOS were accepted with lower scores than those rejected.

@MOMOF5TX That’s how it is for all admissions. The University of Pennsylvania accepted someone who got a 26 on the ACT, failed two AP tests and had mediocre EC’s. It’s just a crapshoot at some points.
