I've visited the campus and liked how there weren't too many bicycles on campus. Is having a bicycle more convenient? I know it probably saves a lot of time traveling from the S40 to the campus when you have multiple classes in one day but large breaks in between. Is it hard to find convenient places to lock your bike? Any cases of theft? Is there a bicycling club on campus? bike around st. louis or something? Thanks!

Lots of bikes on campus. Plenty of places to lock them up. Many people rent them from an on-campus organization–BearsBikes ([Bears’ Bikes: Your Washington University Transportation Solution](http://www.bearsbikes.com/)). I bet there’s a bike club on campus, but don’t know for sure. There are several in the STL metro area.

Yeah, it’s not unusual to take a bicycle to WashU at all. Most people walk, though. For me, I took a bicycle to school in the fall and used it occasionally to get around Forest Park, which is a lot of fun. I had one pair of classes that I had to use it to get between, as they were back-to-back on opposite ends of the campus. Second semester I could get to my classes on time without it, so I never used it at all…

I have heard of people having their bikes stolen, although if you keep a lock on your bike that shouldn’t really be a problem, at least on campus anyway.

Bikes aren’t really that necessary. There are lots of bike racks if you want to bring one, but you could totally get by without having one. Campus isn’t that big :)

Bring a bike if you enjoy taking excursions and think you’ll do a lot of biking (as opposed to running, I suppose) in Forest Park. But it’s like not at all essential to have one. It takes MAYBE 10 minutes to walk from Brookings to the AC, and those are on the complete opposite ends of campus.

I would advise against bringing one, and if you decide you want one when you’re here, then go to Bear’s Bikes as one of the other posters said. They have some nice stuff, and WUPD has bike locks and stuff.

^^^ It is possible to have a class in the village right after a class down by Kemper
But i wouldn’t bring a bike as a “just-in-case something like that happens”… if you have a freakish schedule, you’ll know that well before the semester starts so there’s plenty of time to rent a bike for the semester or whatever.

I did an overnight at WashU and my student roommate said that bicycles are pretty good to have on campus, especially for Engineering students who have to walk to the other corner of campus from the South 40. There are many places to lock up the bikes at the dorms.

Well… I think about it this way. If walking to a class in the morning takes me about 10-15 minutes and biking only takes me 5-7 minutes, that’s an extra 3-10 minutes I could be using to sleep instead. xD

Personally, I did bring a bike and I used it just about every time I went to class. I just think it’s more convenient (and faster) than just walking.

But at the same time, I’m able to drive to WashU so it’s more convenient for me to bring a bike than someone flying in. But there is bike rental. (Or buy a bike and just store it in the summer or let a friend borrow it in the summer.)
