Big Dilemma! PENN STATE OR UC RIVERSIDE

Okay, I have a huge problem. I can't choose which college to go to. I know Penn State is a lot better than UCR, but i am a SoCaL resident which makes it much more convenient to go to UCR. I never even went to Pennsylvania nor do i know anyone there. This is my problem. Someone please help me figure out which is a better choice. Also, i got into the Penn State York campus and they offered me the honors program, but i have to commute as they have no dorms on campus. I have no idea what i should do. Going Penn state would be a good idea to get away from everything back at home but i may die there and no one would know :O. As of now, I took the risk of SIRing to both of them but i am stuck with the next step. Again, someone please give me some insight. Thanks.

What where you thinking when you applied? Getting away? I can imagine commuting in an unfamiliar place would take some serious determination to be at a particluar school.

Penn State York is not Penn State University Park

(Somewhat analogous: UC Merced is not UC Berkeley, CSU LA is not Cal Poly SLO.)

Unless there is some sort of transfer guarantee from York to University Park, there does not seem to be much reason to go there as an out of state student, as the [bachelor’s degree programs at York](http://yk.psu.edu/Academics/bacc.htm) are very limited. It almost seems more like a community college with a few bachelor’s degree programs added on.

Go with UC Riverside. You’ll be paying OOS at Penn State and York is just not as good as University Park.

Penn State guarantees your last 2 years in University Park.

penn state has a better reputation…

Neither of the two schools has too good of a reputation.

Go to riverside if it’s gonna be cheaper and going to Penn state for a branch campus is definitely not worth it.

UC Riverside is up and coming. Like all UC campuses they take only the top 10% of high school graduates. (I don’t know what similar stats are for Penn State). You didn’t say what your major is but the programs in engineering, business and agriculture at UCR are well recognized. They have one of the foremost entomology departments in the US. They are opening a medical school.

Riverside isn’t one of the most exciting towns, it’s true. But the campus has some sort of activity almost every weekend. The campus is green with many new buildings and the dorms are nice.

@ calvincoolridge : I said ‘better’

Which of these will be less expensive for you?

Definitely Riverside would be less expensive. Also, i have not decided on my major yet so basically i am undecided but i registered as a business major.

UCR is supposed to be good in business; it’s not science/engineering oriented like UCSD, for example.
