Big List of MT Colleges by Program Type

Interesting. I had seen your post on another thread and went to the website. I only saw auditions for scholarships. I will put it in the auditioned section of the list when I update it since you have personal knowledge of their process.

Somewhere on the site it should mention the Musical Theatre Ensemble and the Classical Repertory Ensemble, both of which are auditioned concentrations within the BA Theatre program. It doesn’t explain that very clearly on the site, I didn’t even know they were concentrations until after the auditions.

bumping list so it’s kept near the top - wish we could pin this!!!

Just some clarification for North Carolina school: Western Carolina University.

We offer a BFA in Musical Theatre as well as Acting (auditions required for both).

Thank you!

wcusas - This list is just for MT programs. It is on the auditioned portion of the list for both BFA and BA/BM. Does WCU no longer offer a BM in Musical Theatre?

MODERATORS - PLEASE CONSIDER PINNING!

I started with the Big List of MT Colleges (Post #2) already on CC, of which I am so very thankful for. I removed graduate programs. I sorted the schools into categories: Non-Audition BA’s/BM’s, Non-Audition BFA’s, Audition BA’s/BM’s, Audition BFA’s, and BA-to-BFA programs. Please be aware that many non-audition schools may require an audition to be considered for scholarships. Also, I urge you to do your research – there are many BA programs that act like BFA’s, and many BFA programs that have full general education requirements. Look at the curriculum; read the CC posts, and talk to current students and professors to find the right match.

Following the name of the school in parentheses is a note if the program is other than a BA or BFA in MT, the state where the school is located, and in some cases, the number of students the school yields each year. I have done away with the mark of a + to indicate difficulty of admittance. Most audition programs are very difficult to get in to. Some are not quite as difficult, but cut students. Do your research. I added an * if the school requires a pre-screening to be invited to audition.

Please do not use this thread as a discussion on the various programs. Let’s keep it as much of a pure resource as possible.

For the most part, the details on this list were compiled by CC moderators and updated by parents. Please help to keep this list updated. If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, if you know a school has changed from BA to a BFA or vice versa, or you know the number of students in an entering freshman class, please copy and paste and mark your change in red. If you prefer, you can PM me and I will make the change. I hope this helps!

USC and Troy’s MT concentration is auditioned, so moved to Auditioned BA category

I don’t see Michigan State University on the list… BA, BFA, MFA. I hear great things from students in the program. <a href=β€œAdmissions – Department of Theatre”>Dionne O’Dell Named Interim Director of Arts, Cultural Management, and Museum Studies Program – Department of Theatre;

@MTmom2015 - Does Michigan State have a specific MT program? I could not find a reference to a major, minor, concentration, or certificate program in MT on their website. Maybe I missed it somehow.

The lists on this forum are for schools with dedicated MT programs.

It is my understanding that they are adding a MT minor this year? Does that count?

Yes, the contributors to the forum have tried to list all MT minors that can be found through the years. MSU has not listed it yet in their online course catalog, but it is certainly great news to hear that they are adding it.

Kris Koop Ouellette (Bway Phantom) just joined the faculty at MSU and she told me the plans are to expand the MT & dance depts and add a Mt minor in the next year. Perhaps not for the 2013-14 year, but likely the next. :slight_smile: Something for Midwest HS underclassmen to keep on their radar for the future.

I auditioned last year and they are super nice and accommodating at MSU. I was also nominated for an Ovation Award which is run through MSU and the faculty is really top notch it will be a program to watch out for if you have specific questions about the audition feel free to message me.

Be careful: Montclair State University is also known as MSU (and they have a fabulous BFA MT program already) so this could get confusing!

Let’s please use this thread only for changes, not discussions. Thanks!

MODERATORS - PLEASE CONSIDER PINNING!

I started with the Big List of MT Colleges (Post #2) already on CC, of which I am so very thankful for. I removed graduate programs. I sorted the schools into categories: Non-Audition BAΒ’s/BMΒ’s, Non-Audition BFAΒ’s, Audition BAΒ’s/BMΒ’s, Audition BFAΒ’s, and BA-to-BFA programs. Please be aware that many non-audition schools may require an audition to be considered for scholarships. Also, I urge you to do your research Β– there are many BA programs that act like BFAΒ’s, and many BFA programs that have full general education requirements.

LetΒ’s keep it as much of a pure resource as possible.

Updates: Nebraska Wesleyan now requires a DVD; U of New Hampshire now requires auditions; U of Washington has a new BA MT program;

As noted on the web page, you enter as an acting, VP, or dance major and then audition for entry in the Spring Term of your first year for admission to the MT minor. This is very interesting to me because of the quality of their acting, dance, and vocal departments.

Here’s an update to Columbia College Chicago. I don’t see it on the BA to BFA list. I got this off their website today.

β€œNo auditions are required for admission into the BA degree program. All Musical Theatre students begin as BA candidates. The BFA in Theatre/Musical Theatre Performance concentration is a selective, pre-professional degree. Auditions are held each semester for interested students enrolled in at least 32 credit hours. The first opportunity to audition is generally the second semester of the freshman year.”
