Big List of MT Colleges: By State

MODERATOR NOTE: FOR THE MOST UPDATED LIST, PLEASE SEE POST #2 WHICH IS MORE COMPLETE THAN POST #1'S LIST.

Here is the big list of schools that offer a musical theater degree. This list was formerly part of a FAQ MT college site that a now CC "alum", Shauna, had compiled as a Geocities site that CC posted a link to at the top of our MT Forum. As the Geocities site is no longer available and is discontinued by Yahoo, CC is posting this valuable resource of the list of MT Colleges that was formerly compiled.

As Shauna wrote on her original Geocities site, this list was made in large part by Dancersmom and doctorjohn, two CC members, and although pretty much everyone on the board has contributed at some point, these two did the vast majority of the work. (Thanks also to ILMomsk, Lauren Z., Nick, klass, Lexasmom, Mary Anne, and MusThCC for updates.) The list begins with colleges that offer undergraduate musical theater degrees. They are organized alphabetically by state. Following the name of the school in parentheses is the type of degree they offer, and, in some cases, the number of students the school offers admission to.

Colleges that offer graduate degrees are at the bottom of the page.

If you know of any colleges that offer a musical theater degree that are not listed on this page, please let us know.

KEY:

A + next to a school indicates that they are especially selective (that they admit only a small number of applicants).

A ~ next to a school indicates that they are non-audition (that they do not require an audition to major in musical theater). Schools without this mark do require an audition.

Just a note - Coastal Carolina is in South Carolina, not North.

Thank you, keepingcalm. When I was looking under NC when I went to add some other programs to the Big List, I thought it was odd that we didn’t have Coastal Carolina listed as we even have a sub forum for that school and its dept. chair posts here. So, I went to add it. In the back of my mind, I was thinking I must have the wrong Carolina, and then forgot to go check on SC after I had added the school. My mistake! Thank you so much for correcting this. Coastal Carolina is indeed already on the list and of course is in South Carolina, not North!

I am going to go and edit the list now to correct this error.
SEE POST #2 ABOVE FOR THE CORRECTION.

Thank you CollegeMom for posting this list. I think that having a thread devoted solely to the Big List will make it easier for newcomers to find. I suspect that many people overlook the notation on the FAQ thread. Hopefully, this thread can be “stickied” to the top of the page so that it will be easy to find. (Perhaps bold, red type could be used?)

I am pleased that the Big List resource is available and that members are continuing to add to it. As far as I know, there was nothing like it available when I started doing research for my D in 2002. I spent many hours perusing books and other resources in libraries and bookstores before discovering the CC community. I could have saved myself hours of frustrating research if I had known about CC sooner! I found the forum purely by accident. Now CC’s MT forum has become well known as the number one place to go for information on college MT programs.

I haven’t posted regularly in quite some time, since my D got her BFA in 2008, but I still read regularly. I appreciate each and every one who has shared on this forum. Thanks to all!

Regarding Temple University, do you think it would be appropriate to note that the MT concentration is by audition?

Dancersmom:
I don’t take credit for the list and am grateful to several CC members who started it and have updated it over the years. I did add some programs today that I know of that I realized were not on the list. Another member also mentioned University of North Texas and I added that.

This thread is already STICKIED to the top of the MT Forum list of threads. I think you may not realize that there is no longer the FAQ link that linked to the BIG LIST. That link went to a Geocities site that Shauna had set up and Yahoo has now done away with Geocities. Thus, you may note that on the first post of this thread, which is dated October 29, 2009, that I copied and pasted the Big List that used to be on the Geocities site that CC’s MT Forum linked to in the FAQ and made a stickied thread (this thread). This list is a great resource for those new to the MT college search process. By the way, there is no way to use color or bold on the thread titles on CC.

MichaelNKat:
I know that Temple is by audition. However, I kept to Shauna’s notation which is explained at the start of the thread and that is that programs have an audition unless she noted the symbol “~” before a school which indicates no audition. So, Temple is not the only BA by audition school noted here that doesn’t say “by audition” but is implied as there is no “~” symbol before it. Examples: JMU and American are BA schools by audition and have no “~” before them. Trying to stay consistent with how the original list was formatted by others.

This list, which others compiled, is organized by state. I tend to organize MT colleges differently and do it by BFA, BM, BA by audition, BA no audition, etc. I prefer my way to the way it was done here but will keep with this list as this is the long term list created here and it is a good list but simply organized differently than I would do it.

CollegeMom,
Thanks for straightening me out. I had not noticed that the link on the FAQ thread no longer worked. I also didn’t pay attention to the 10-2009 date on this thread. I thought you’d just done it today in response to a conversation on another thread. In any case, as I said earlier, I’m glad that the resource is here. I do think it’s a bit of a shame that there is no way to put the thread title in red or in boldface, but I suppose we can’t have everything :).

Actually, I need to un-sticky the thread that linked to the FAQ. All of the FAQ, along with the Big List, was on the Geocities site which yahoo has now done away with. So, no sense in having that sticky any longer.

I believe that Doctorjohn saved everything that was on that site. But I chose to copy and paste the Big List here since that was one major resource that we did not want to lose and for now, that is preserved here on this thread as of late October. Today, I was simply updating the list.

Please add Central Washington University - BFA Musical Theatre

College Mom - don’t know how you feel about people updating this list themselves -?

Just wanted to add that UC-Irvine now has a BFA in MT.

THANK YOU BELLEVUEMOM AND MTMAMA.

I think rather than copying the list and adding to it in new posts, I’m going to just be the “keeper” of the list and take all your new contributions and add them to the list in POST #2. If we have a lot of lists in subsequent posts, it may confuse new members as to which list to look at. I’d prefer to have ONE. I have made a note in the first post on this thread that the SECOND POST is the most updated list. I’ll continue to add to that list and use red to point out any additions/updates.

Thanks for unlocking the “Big List” thread and updating the list. I have been having a vigorous debate about the need for people to be able to post on the thread so information is current and CC hears if a school is missing or changing their program. One program that is omitted from the “Big List” is University of Teas at El Paso which has a BFA in MT. Thanks again.

utepsong,

University of Texas at El Paso is on CC’s Big List of MT Colleges (see first post on this thread).

CC prefers to have one list of all colleges that offer programs in MT.

The reason this thread was locked is because the Big List was always a link we had to a site on Geocities. Nobody could add to that list directly except those who maintained that site. When CCers mentioned programs to add from time to time, those who kept that site added them. Otherwise, members did not directly add to the list. People have ALWAYS been able to add current information.

When Geocities ended, CC was able to copy and paste the list here on a thread directly. It was locked because as before, we did not have everyone editing the list. Rather, just as before, any member can suggest additions to the list. This happens from time to time and that list has been periodically updated. This is nothing new. I’ll leave the list open a while longer if anyone has new additions and then close it and if new additions arise again, one can mention it on the forum, contact a mod, send a report to CC, etc. just as before. Nothing is new in this regard other than the list was copied and pasted onto a thread, rather than the link as we had for many years.

Marywood University, BA MT Scranton, PA Audition required.

Please add – Emory & Henry College, VA – BA MT Pre-Professional Track – Audition required for consideration for the Pre-Professional Tracks.

Thank you frantiki and KatMT for those two schools/programs. I had not heard of these two colleges before or these MT programs.

I have added them to the master Big List in Post #2 which has all the updates.

please Add Heidelberg University (BA or BS through Communications and Theatre/ Music - Emphasis)

Thanks. I have added Heidelberg to the most updated list which is post #2 on this thread.

Texas State University has a brand new revised and upgraded BFA in MT for next year and I understand there is some $ being given out, even to out of state applicants. From the site: “The Musical Theatre BFA program is an exciting new addition to the degree programs offered through the Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas State. …”
