After going to the UCSB reception and doing a little more research about the school, I'm seriously thinking about going to UCSB next year. I've been hearing good things about their history program (which I plan to major in), the school isn't too big and puts a big emphasis on undergrads. UCSB also has an amazing campus!

The only thing that's making me feel hesistant about UCSB is the huge "party school" image it has. Everyone says that college is what you make of it and that you don't have to party if you don't want to and blah blah blah, but how crazy IS the party scene at UCSB?

I don't want to feel completely out of place in college, surrounded by loud, drunk people all the time!

from what ive heard, you can kind of pick your own scene. There are kids who do not party, and theres kids who just have fun, and theres the kids who go all out. You kind of just find the people who relate to you most and go with em'. Just hope you dont get roomated with some crazy partyer.

it's not that big of a deal... like everywhere there are students who party and students who don't... it's just that the party scene for students who do want to party is amazing...

and as for noise, unsanitary housing, drug dealers and danger in IV, that is all not as bad as you make it sound... i've never seen or heard of anything that i would consider dangerous in IV, the standard of the housing just depends on who is living there, drug dealers i've never seen any standing around selling drugs (and you are going to find drugs no matter what school you go to), and as for noise there are parties held on friday and saturday nights and the odd one on thursdays or sundays, but the police shut anything that's too loud down at midnight...

you're always going to hear stories about all the parties and the fun stuff that goes on, but that doesn't mean there aren't students who concentrate on their studies for the mostpart, because there are plenty...

I am current freshman in UCSB, and I love it here. Before I came here I was thinking it's going to be crazy party school, but in reality it's not. It's all depend on if you want to party or not, and even if you want to party, you need to have connection. So it's not like you party all the time. For me, I never party, and there are tons of people are just like that. So it is perfect for party animals and party haters

Are you sure there are "tons" of people just like that?

UCSB was rated one of the top party schools in the United States... I'm really worried about that and THAT may be the only reason I will not go to UCSB, I am not a "party" person at all.

I'm thinkin goin UCSC isntead of UCSB because of the "partying" at ucsb.

Hopefully, I'm still waiting for Irvine and maybe my appeal to davis will get through. Sigh... God am I depressed.

dude trust me...i have many friends are just like me. I never party and they never party either. Also if u hate party a lot, consider choose substance free floor which majority of people don't party. I found UCSB to be awesom and really it all depend on you

Haven't you heard that UCSB is in the process of shedding that reputation? It's been getting harder and harder to get into every year. Don't let its past image prevent you from attending your school of choice.

Thanks f77126. I might just go to UCSB. Hopefully we'll be at the same substance-free dorm. :)

i still feel like crap about getting rejected from UCD, but I don't know, maybe UCSB isn't as bad as it seems (top 10 party schools rated by playboy)

LoL, what the heck happened to Chico State on Playboy's top 10 party school list. I remember it was #2 back then. It looks like UCSB took over Chico's #2 ranking. They aren't even on the list anymore.

I think UCSB is unfairly taking the rap for a large party scene that is in IV, and because IV is so concentrated and historically has been an area subjected to controversy, because of the overwhelmingly dominate collegiate population, nonetheless the party and dangerous stigma has been unjustly perpetrated by rankings such as Playboy and other publications and from the over advertisement of isolated events. In other words, you must take what you hear about UCSB, IV or with any other institution for that matter with a grain of salt.
