Big Ten alum

Any opinions on the possible expansion of the Big 10. On the east coast we are hearing Pitt, Syracuse or Rutgers. Joe Pa seems to be pushing it with Rutgers the leader. He said ND had their chance so they should not be asked again. I have also heard Missouri is a candidate but the conference wants to move east-read NY market.

Huh? So the Big Ten becomes what, the Big 11?

The Big Kahuna.

mom -it already is the Big 11 they want a 12th so they can improve scheduling.

The Big Ten is already the Big Eleven; I guess they are going for the Big Twelve.

LOL, shows you how much I know about college football.

Not going to happen.

JoePa is talking up those schools for recruiting reasons - none of those schools add a new, significant TV market (much less a packed FB stadium) to make up for dividing the most lucrative TV rights in college sports further w/ an additional school.

Tressel from Ohio State is making similar noise. Seems the lack of a Championship Big 10 football game is starting to hurt recruiting. Word is that the SEC and Big 12 are hurting the Big 10 and many coaches feel the league needs the game. I think the Minnesota football coach also said some positive things about expansion.

If the Big 10 feels Rutgers could bring in some part of the New York market does that help the Big 10 TV network? Even a small piece of that market is bigger than almost every other market the Big 10 schools are in.

If it ever happens, my vote goes to University of Pittsburgh. I’m not sure about their academics, but athletically the university would be a good match for the conference and it would build the rivalry against Penn.

What hurts is the B10 season ending a couple of weeks before the other conferences and not the lack of a championship game (see the ACC where the championship game has thus far been a dud).

As for recruiting, the Pac10 doesn’t have a championship game and USC manages to more talent than any other school.

B10 schools like Northwestern, Minny, Illinois and MSU are recruiting better than ever and PSU consistently takes the top talent out of MD.

Not many people in NYC cares about Rutgers, much less Rutgers FB. The school that would bring the most viewers in the NYC market would be ND.

When ABC televises CFB games in the NYC area, it tends to be B10 games.

Plus, YES (the Yankees network) carries the Penn St. FB show, the B10 network is carried by the region’s cable providers and there are radio outlets in the NY/NJ area that carry all PSU games.

As for Pitt, it doesn’t bring a new market (since PSU already covers Pittsburgh) and attendance at Pitt FB games have been rather lackluster.

I think RU is the favorite. It adds major TV markets in NY/NJ and has the academic profile that fits.

Possible candidates: Notre Dame, Chicago, Missouri, Syracuse, WUSTL

I really think this is a stupid idea. If you had to do it though, I’d say notre Dame or nothing. Penn State already is too far east, and I think it should stay Midwest. Chicago would be cool too, but there already is a school in the Chicago metro and two within an hour and a half drive north and south. Plus it would drastically change the school’s reputation- a positive change in my opinion, but probably not for most people there.

The University of North Dakota would be cool, but that ain’t gonna happen cause the Fighting Sioux won’t bring in the cash that the conference is looking for.

ND will not join a conference for football since they are financially independent.
barrons do you think Rutgers to the Big 10 will happen. I know on the Rutgers football sites most see it as great for Rutgers but since the BC, Miami fiasco with the Big East the Rutgers fans believe they need to go but are concerned that they do it open and honestly.

If a school does not already have Division 1 football they are not in this discussion. The other thing is that supposedly when Penn St joined the Big 10 years ago there were promises to get them an eastern opponent to make scheduling easier for their fan base.

K&s- rumor is the Pac10 will ask Utah and maybe Colorado to be members to get to 12. If Colorado leaves the Big 12 the raiding of other conferences begins.

Everyone wants that championship game.

The Pac-10 isn’t going to invite anybody to join anytime soon. That rumor has existed for years, but nothing is going to happen.

SUNY Buffalo would be cool.

Okay, let me get this straight. The Big 10 has 11 teams. However, they still call themselves the Big 10. If they add an additional team, what would they call themselves? Following their current tradition, they would be the Big 11. The Big 12 is already taken. I don’t think that calling themselves the Little 12 would sound that imposing. They would probably do better dropping the number, as they have shown a lacking in Math ability. They can’t be the Big East, but the Big Midwest doesn’t really cut it. This will be interesting to watch.
